Wisdom teeth - do they need routine extraction before braces?

#1 Post by CeramicCynthia »

Hi guys,
Backstory- I'm a late bloomer when it comes to teeth. I was over 12 months old when I got my first tooth and at 18, I still had 4 baby teeth that had to be pulled so I could get braces.
I'm now 31 and looking to get braces again. I had a consult with an orthodontist the other day which showed I have 4 wisdom teeth sitting in my gums. Unlike many people, I don't have overcrowding - the reason I want braces is to close gaps, so I don't need any extractions of my regular teeth. The orthodontist said that the wisdom teeth looked like they were aligned straight and that he would only want to remove them if they caused problems.
However, I'm absolutely terrified that they'll come in when my treatment is over and ruin my new straight teeth and make them crooked. When I look in the mirror I can't see where they're going to fit in, there isn't space. What if I don't realise they're coming down and only spot it when they've already made my teeth crooked? I don't want to have to get braces a 3rd time.

Has anyone been in a similar scenario before? Could I go to a dentist and request to voluntarily have my wisdom teeth removed, even if they're not currently causing any problems?
I have consults booked with 4 other orthodontists over the next few weeks so will definitely be asking for additional opinions.

My orhto said I would not immediately hve to have mine removed.. as it does not usually cause problems after the braces are removed even if the teeth are there... however if they look at it towards the end of your treatment and think it will affect the work you just had done, they will advise you to remove it.

They only need removal when you don't have space and they try to come in; and trust me you would know because it would be very painful.

I don't complain about anything very often, even if I'm suffering, but my wisdom teeth coming in was the worst pain I ever had, what's worse is that they were coming in at a really bad angle and I had to wait for a new dental insurance to kick in before I could afford to get them removed; so I waited too long and the pain was nearly unbearable.

I think my wisdom teeth coming in is how my smile and bite got as bad as it did (i went from a small overbite to a complete Anterior Open Bite from molar to molar); now $6000 and almost 2 years later I'm almost done with braces for the 1st time (i never got them at 13, but I was supposed to)

Just follow your Orthodontists or dentists advice (if either advises removal, do it quick), and if you start noticing pain coming from your wisdom teeth coming in; definitely get it taken care of quick.
Lots of crimes here

1. The upper molars bite too far ahead of the lower molars

2. Missing teeth #s 9, 14, and, 29

3. Open bite

4. Upper midline left of center

5. Lower midline right of center

6. Upper and lower teeth not straight

Sentence - 24 months, turned to 27 month.

Braces removed since 11/06/17

I think you can request them out. While on active duty (naval officer) we had to have wisdom teeth extracted so they wouldn't cause problems (e.g., impaction) during a deployment. Fun times.

What's weird is that when I voiced my concerns to the orthodontist, he said "But they won't make your teeth crooked - if your teeth are straight and the wisdom teeth come in, there's nowhere for your teeth to move to". But isn't that how crowding happens? Too many teeth, not enough space?

Hi,
I have 4 impacted wisdom teeth and they are not giving me any problems. I have had braces on for 1 week and had 2 impacted canines exposed yesterday. When I started this process 6 months ago - no talk of removing my wisdoms came up - I don't have crowding either. I asked the surgeon yesterday if they will cause problems later and he said we would just have to see. My orthodontist doesn't thing so... but we will cross that bridge if we come to it later. No point in taking them out now if they don't even cause problems imo.

If you wear your retainers as instructed, your teeth will stay straight. All of my wisdom teeth are still in post braces. No problems. But everyone's different.

Have you asked your dentist for a second opinion? I know a lot of people that had braces as a kid and now their teeth are crooked because their wisdom teeth came in. A friend of mine had a permanent retainer and it caused her wire to pop off and teeth to move.

My ortho when I was a teen advised to have all mine removed, it was before they came in to avoid crowding issues in the future.

It's interesting cause I've heard different things from different dental professionals. My dentist's office recommends that I get them removed before I finish with my braces. I went to my first orthodontic consultation (whom I ended up choosing in the end), the orthodontist said my wisdom teeth aren't a problem and it doesn't matter if I get them removed or not. I went to a second orthodontic consultation somewhere else, and the orthodontist there said that I didn't have to get them removed right away, but he said that I would have to get them removed before I finish with my braces. I probably will get them removed, just to be on the safe side, cause I've read posts on here where people have gotten their wisdom teeth removed post-braces, only to have their teeth start shifting!
