Hi! Just wanted to let you know I feel your pain! I'm two weeks in now though and it's sooooo much better. I still cant chew due to teeth not connecting but eating soft foods is okay. The pain for me went away around day 9/10 and was only really unbearable for the first 4-5 days. I used tramacet on bad days and advil when needed because it really did help. Cold icey smoothies and ambesol to numb my gums. I also bought a SUPER soft toothbrush.. and didn't even try to floss until the pain went away...

It will get better, hang in there!

Thankyou everyone for all your helpful comments.

How long can I expect the pain to last before it subsides? I mean the aching / sensitive teeth pain

And then also how long did it take for your gums to get used to the braces? I can't imagine everyone puts wax on their brackets every single day for a year plus! I'm hoping that eventually my gums will toughen up to it? Is that what happens?

Just trying to see how long this is going to last so I can get some light at the end of the tunnel because honestly at this point I've never felt so upset and frustrated!

After every wire change it takes me about 1 to 2 weeks to be fully able to eat again without any soreness or pain. The pain usually sets in the second day after the change.

I STILL use wires here or there. I have had my braces for 2 months now and still have some teeth that bother me. As your teeth shift and change I think you will probably conitnue to need braces your whole time in treatment albeit a bit more spaced out and definitely not every day. I usually just sleep in wax but can go without wax on a daily basis. It's weird how one day you will be fine and the next your lips are so sore. I bought a 10 pack of wax off eBay so I am stocked up.

Hang in there! You'll get used to in a week, and you won't even feel it after that.....until that next adjustment that is. :)

As you can see from all the replies you are not alone. Yes, the first few days can be miserable, but over time you will forget you have them on. As others have said, OTC pain killers work just fine and there are also other things you can do. They make liquid pain killers for mouth sores that help a lot, and if your braces are digging into your mouth dental wax works great. I also found mouthwashes specially made for braces worked for me, too. If you have a wire poking into your cheek your ortho can take care of that quickly to stop the pain. I've had this a few times and it was a five minute visit at the ortho. Temporarily dental wax solve the problem. Meanwhile, try to do things that take your mind off the braces -- any active sports or even SPAMS will help. Hang in there. It will be worth it.
We sell them at DentaKit, plus a bunch of other types which might also help, and our site has genuine customer reviews: http://www.dentakit.com/dewaxalandli.html
Oh wow, that shower version of the waterpik is super cool. It's definitely going on my wish list
