6 month smile journey

#1 Post by louis »

Just under 2 months in on a 6 month smile journey to correct overcrowding top and bottom. Dentist said it would likely take 7/8 months to complete. Currently have elastics in 24/7 to bring my bite together. At the moment, I'm not even sure there is enough room for the overcrowded teeth to move into...!

Quick update, things are really starting to move in my top arch now, the bar is slightly stronger and you can definitely feel it working more. My two front teeth have really moved down quickly in the last few days. Some photos...

So, I've got an overbite, and I understand that 6ms will not correct bites but it does change them slightly during the process. I believe a great deal of my overbite is due to my two front teeth overlapping the other teeth and was hoping, once they are aligned, the 2 front teeth move back a significant amount 0.8-1.0cm. Does anyone know if this will be the case? I have included a quick up to date picture of the arch.

Below is a photo of me moving my bottom arch back to allow me to bite down on my back teeth (top half of photo) and relaxed biting down directly (bottom half of photo) which shows the overbite.

Hi, great progress you must be really pleased!

I found with 6ms that my bite has changed several times. At first my arch was more v shaped and teeth tipped in so the front teeth stuck out. My arch has started rounding and there's more room in the front for the wire to pull them back in. I also think that until teeth are in the right places your bite will be different. Towards the end of treatment I think some IPR and adjustments can help pull things together. As you move up wire thickness it should help with rounding arches and tipping teeth straighter.

At least that's what I'm told (and hoping!). One side of my top arch is much rounder than the other as it had less issues on that side which has made loads of room.

Hang in there, there's lots of times for things to come together! :)

Thanks for the reply, I'm quite pleased with how things have gone so far.

I just want my other top insisor to come down in line with the other, I have recently noticed that the bar is not properly in on this tooth on one side because of the angle which could be why it hasn't moved in a while?

I had IPR before the braces were fit and on the first adjustment. Will be happy to have more if required, as long as it's not too much as I've heard it can cause permanent sensitivity.

Also the class ii elastics I have in seem to be barely working in bringing my bite together, does anyone else have these in a box configuration, how long did it take?

I have a premolar missing on my right side upper arch which the dentist is closing up and in turn making space for the overcrowding. The space is about 75% closed now using powerchains, but I feel that quite a bit more space will need to be made to fully correct the overcrowding and to pull the upper arch in a bit to stop it protruding so much. Would it be a good idea to ask the dentist to extract the opposite premolar on my left hand side to make this space halfway through the treatment? I would then also benefit from having the same amount of teeth each side on the top arch.

4 months in now and I have just had the wired changed to the thickest wire along with a bit more IPR. One of my central insisors will be shaved down to match the smaller one which was shaved down when I was much younger to match the other at that time. Obviously I wish I hadn't had it shaved at all now but not much I can do. The other teeth on the top arch may also need to be levelled to match. Arch has rounded out nicely, but I would like to see more improvement to the overjet/overbite.

Quick update, I now have a power chain around upper front teeth to bring them back.

Does anyone know if the power chain will tilt the top canines outwards? I feel that they are tipping in slightly and could do with tipping outwards a bit. It would help my bottom canines to fit under them if that makes sense? If not, what would do this?
