Four month anniversary of having my braces today and I was "rewarded" by the ortho graduating me to the rubber band stage to correct my overbite/overjet. These things hurt like a mofo!
Every treatment plan is different- I went more than two years before getting into elastics. I am in it now and also approaching the end of my plan. I find it annoying, but the pain is not nearly as bad as I thought it might be.
When I got elastics, I thought they were the worst thing that has happened to me since PMS. After a week I got used to them and now it feels weird to be without them. The pain subsided in that first week and even though it's still hard to eat in public sometimes, I like the feeling they give me. Playing with elastics with my tongue is also quite satisfying
