Braces at 55

#1 Post by vyvyen »

Hello,

Just introducing myself. I have an Orthodontist appointment tomorrow to have braces at the grand old age of 55! I'm feeling very nervous and wondering if my old worn teeth will withstand the treatment. Is it best to have the ceramic braces? I really don't like the idea of having a mouth full of metal at my age ;) .

Cheers,

Vyvyen

Welcome! I think it is truly a personal choice what type of braces you get. I have all metal, and I can say that I haven't wished for something different ever. I like my braces.. I just wish they worked a bit faster. For the record, I am 44 years young, so I can relate to being on the older side of "having braces". My 15 yo daughter and I have them together

I'm new as well and also 55. It's been four weeks today that I got my top braces on. I'll be getting the lower braces in late January/early February.

I have ceramic braces on top. When I get the bottom braces, they will be metal. Friends tell me that my ceramic braces aren't that noticeable but most people won't say anything about you having braces anyway.

Welcome and good luck with your appointment. Your orthodontist can explain some of the pros and cons of the clear Damons. I have them, and recently passed my one year mark at age 62. I did not like the idea of all metal either. Make sure your ortho is comfortable with the Damons and has experience and success with them.

Vyvyen: I did ceramics top and bottom starting at age 64, off at 66 about 18 months later. Ceramics or metal are a matter of personal choice as pretty much no one else cares but cares but ourselves and there should be no difference in the time factor. I found that no one mentioned them when I was wearing them and no one mentioned when they came off. I meet with people professionally all the time and no one stared at my teeth, even with elastics. Most of my initial worries were pretty much non-consequential in the end.

Welcome! I'm 52. I have all metal upper and lowers. Mine have been on for 10 weeks now with some nice results. I will have to post before and now pics. I'm a Scout leader and they think it's cool and old guy in braces. :D

I got braces last year at 43. I have ceramic upper and lower. They are not so noticeable, specially from a distance.

Hey Vy--

I got braces at 55 and just got them off last April at 57...so 2 yrs in braces...Damon Q all metal.
Having them in public wasn't a big deal at all. I never got made fun of even once (that I know of) and kids are the most accepting (!). Most of the time, people just say they wish they had or want to have braces themselves. When older people stare at your braces, stare at their teeth--they shut their mouths real quick!!

Now at 57 for the first time in my life, new acquaintances are telling me that they love my smile, or they compliment my teeth--totally out of the blue! And not just a few people--a lot!! (Really!)

IT HAS BEEN WORTH EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY PAIN-IN-THE-BUTT MINUTE---I KID YOU NOT!!!

I was not sure at my age how well or what speed my teeth would move. They are!! I love my smile already!!

This is a great place for questions..advice and just good ole support!!

I'm 49...got my braces a month ago. Clear on top, metal on the bottom, orange and blue ligs (GO BRONCOS!). First adjustment next week. I should have them off in time for my 51st birthday :)
Braces off on 8/26/14 after a year!

Aaawww so great to see so many mature lovelies getting braces. Well my appointment went terrible. Orthodontist that specialises in adults won't attempt mine. I'm a problem patient. Bone loss, some gum disease, terrible gag reflex, allergic to metal nickel. He said all orthodontics have nickel!
I read up about invisaline but very worried I would also be allergic to that and would not cope with my gag reflex. Can't handle xrays in the back of my mouth and no way would I cope with impressions.
Have felt so despondent and depressed today and can't think of a solution.
I wish all of you the best outcome for your smiles. Oh how I hate mine :(

oh no! I'm so sorry vyvyen! There must be some way around this. The ortho couldn't recommend another type of treatment?

So Sorry!
Can you go to a different ortho for a consult? My ortho treats kids and adults... I did not go to a specialist. Maybe one of those types can help you? I know that there are braces that are nickel free.... At least I have read about them.
Good luck, keep us updated! Don't give up!!!
