Newbie here!

#1 Post by Spring1onu »

Hello everyone! I've been lurking for a few weeks now and have finally decided to register. I'm not braced yet, but think it will be happening in the next few months. I've gone through a lot of dental work in the last few yrs and I'm so ready to be done, lol. I have an impacted eye tooth on the left side and it's now above my front two teeth and is vertical. I have a lot of dental drama, but I will spare all those details and just sum it up: I have a dental bridge (that I hate as it was poorly done) and have begun seeing a new dentist who has referred me to a wonderful ortho in order to get braced and the impacted canine out (hopefully).

I met with the ortho for the first time yesterday. Lots of X-rays, molds done and pics (ugg!). The plan with my new dentist is to basically get braces, remove bridge, bring impacted eye tooth down and place new crowns on the abutment teeth. I went in yesterday hoping that he would tell me the impacted tooth wasn't fused to the bone. I ended up having to get a 3-D cone beam scan done to verify what they suspect - the impacted canine has caused root resorption on the central incisor :-( that makes me so sad! I will find out the results of the scan on 3/12. I'm hoping I don't lose my tooth! I realize with all the wonderful technology they have, a solution exists, but it's just saddening to me as it just seems like it's one thing after another and I'm really discovering how horrible my previous dentist was.

I'm 38 and not even sure if the impacted tooth will move, let alone not fused to the bone. It's been a learning experience for sure. I just want to have a beautiful smile that I'm not afraid to hide. Does anyone have any experience with root resorption? What were your options? Experience? Result? I'm a nervous wreck and I'm trying not to be since I don't even know the results but the X-ray they gave me yesterday doesn't look very promising. So glad I stumbled upon this board! Thanks for reading!

I don't have any experience with any of that sorry :( But I wanted to say welcome to the board and good luck with getting that smile you've wanted for so long :) I'm sorry your previous dentist has been a nightmare.

Hi spring1onu,
sounds like you have a few issues to deal with. I can't help with the details but I do know from my experience that the hardest part was taking the plunge to get the work done. With the right orthodontist your treatment will be a breeze and you'll soon be on the way to the smile you want. Good luck!

Hello Tobilei & busy bee - thanks for your responses! I did some searching yesterday and read up on root resorption and while it's still an uncomfortable thought, I know things will workout and be alright. I guess I will cross that bridge when I get to it. With that said, March 12 cannot get here fast enough! Lol!

I'm truly glad to have found such a great and informative community. So much to learn but it's all so helpful. I know my husband's eyes must glaze over from all the talking I do about my teeth, braces, and the nitpicking I do over my previous work. I know I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to things like this but you want a great result after having invested the time & money into the work. He understands, but I know he's secretly glad I've found this site, haha.

My ortho is really great and I do feel very positive about his work. I am excited that between him and my new dentist, I will eventually have a smile I'm proud of. Call me crazy, but I'm actually very excited about getting my treatment started! Fingers crossed that the impacted eye tooth is not causing any issues and is able to be brought down and into place. I really don't want to lose another tooth!

Looking forward to starting the journey! Thank you both!

Hi spring1onu,
I'm sure my boyfriend is bored of listening to me talking about my teeth too! Of course he's pleased I'm having the work done but there are only so many conversations you can have about it. This forum must be saving his ears too!

It is really exciting starting treatment and I can't believe how quickly three months have gone already. It's such a worthwhile thing to do for yourself.

LOL! It'll be interesting to see how things go. My poor husband has no idea what he's in for!

I'm anxious, nervous, and excited all at once and I don't even know the plan, lol! I definitely know this is worth it and totally wish I'd done this sooner. Ah well, what's important is that I'm doing it now and I'm so glad I've found a board to share in the ups and downs :) have a fabulous weekend!

Hi Spring1onu!

I hope that your orthodontist can somehow find a way to save your impacted tooth! If not then it's most likely that you may get an implant in place of it if they decide to extract it? I also have an impacted canine, but I don't know for sure if it's fused to the bone yet unfortunately :( I have been in braces for almost a month now, but my ortho is working on straightening out my teeth before trying to expose and bracket the impacted tooth. Please keep us updated and best of luck on your treatment plans!

Hi Teddy13 and thanks for the kind words! I am hoping that when I go back on 3/12 that the news is 1) the impacted tooth isn't causing root resorption and 2) it isn't fused to the bone. The ortho mentioned that if its not able to be saved, then they would go forward with ortho and have my dentist redo my bridge. I had a bridge placed where the missing tooth is. He also said that if my central incisor needs to be taken due to resorption then it's possible to move the impacted canine into its place and have my dentist place a crown on it to match my other front tooth. I really hope that's not the case. I just feel better knowing I'm in much better and capable hands and definitely feel better about receiving treatment. My ortho did assure me this CAN be fixed and it will be beautiful in the end. I so hope that's true! Lol!

Hi Spring1onu,
Just wanted to welcome you to the forum.
I had a chuckle about what you (and Tobelei) wrote about your respective husbands and boyfriends think about all the talking you do about your braces. My husband passed away about 7 years ago but if he were still alive and he could see all the anxiety I was having before I got my braces back in October, he would have been laughing his head off at me. He'd have said, "What? Why are you freaking out about this? Get over yourself already!" I don't have anyone to talk about all these issues so I spend time on this forum. You've found a wonderful place with people who have all been on the same journey with you. Everyone here has loads of advice and will be very sympathetic to any problems you encounter. Keep us posted and stay in touch with us!

Welcome! I can't offer and specific advice and I know that dental issues can result in a steep learning curve. You seem to be handling everything so well. Glad to hear you have found a dentist and orthodontist who will be able to help you.
Oh, I'm another one with a husband who is very grateful for this board :-)

Hi Ciara! Thanks a lot :) I'm trying to be as optimistic as I can be. I know throwing myself a pity party will not help, but sometimes it does feel good, haha. I haven't contacted my previous dentist, even though I want to so bad. I will likely do it but want to wait until I know for sure what the plan is going to be. Some days I do nothing but kick myself for being so foolish and other days I'm not so tough on myself. I just try to keep in mind that I can't change what's already happened. It's hard but I do try :-) very glad I found this forum and I know deep down inside, my husband is too! LOL! He's been great - telling me we will get through it all. He'll likely never know just how much I appreciate him. He's a good guy!

Hi there Dee! You are exactly right - he just tells me in his special way, haha. (Some) men are just so cut and dry ;-) I'm sorry to hear you lost your husband 7 yrs ago. How devastating for you. I couldn't imagine my life without him. My heart goes out to you. I agree that I've found a great community. I'm sure I will have lots of ups and downs throughout this process. Looking forward to getting to know folks better! Take care, Dee!

Hello,
I'm somewhat fairly new here myself, and am also in the process of getting braces. I have a second appointment on the 19th of March. I think thats when I will get the molds, ex-rays, and cleaning done. Afterward if there are no cavities to fill and nothing else major, I hope to get my spacers and get the ball rolling. I don't know if I will have to have any teeth pulled but we shall see.

Welcome to the board.

Sorry to hear about your concerns and thoughts.

I was meant to have been debraced today but due to an issue or two is now next Thursday. Gutted after the anticipation and countdown for now having to start counting down again.

Just want to see a nice smile for the first time in my life, as I had such a severe dental fear as a pre teen it prevented me from seeking ortho treatment and subsequently routine dental check ups.

I am now doing this about 12 years after I initially should have done after getting over my dental phobia.

Today's the day - follow up consultation and when I learn what the 3-D cone beam scan showed.....is the impacted canine causing root resorption on my front tooth? I'm so nervous and truthfully, a bit scared. Send me good ortho vibes/juju please! Lol! I don't see how the result can be anything but what the ortho suspects. It definitely looks that way to me.....guess ill find out soon!
