Sarah's Braces Adventure!

#1 Post by smorse »

Hi everyone!
My name is Sarah. I'm 19 and currently in my second year of college. I had my upper and lower braces put on on August 17th, 2012. I've been so busy reading everyone elses stories that I haven't had a chance to share my own!

I'll begin with my before-braces journey. Ever since I was little I was told I'd need braces due to my deep bite, but about two years ago I was told that I'd need them for an impacted incisor (I still have my baby tooth). Of course, I was a senior in high school at this time and I wasn't about to get braces before Prom, Graduation, etc, so I put it to the side.

Choosing my orthodontist was simple, I knew so many people who went to him and my dentist recommended him completely. Everyone who had him had the prettiest teeth when they got their braces off, so I was set on him being my orthodontist.

He told me my estimated time is 18-24 months. I'm okay with that estimate (even though I know I'll have them for close to two years). Whatever it takes to get my impacted canine down and in place (FINALLY!!).

My first step to my braces process was to get my lower wisdom teeth out. I didn't need my top ones out and won't for a few more years because they are hardly visible in x-rays. Getting those out was a piece of cake. It hurt for a few days after, but I avoided dry-socket in both and had barely any swelling.

I had my spacers put in (2 on top, two on bottom) on August 10th, 2012, and let me just say those were the worst things. I was in so much pain and could basically only eat yogurt.

I then had my braces on on August 17th, and I also hated that experience. It took them about 3 hours to put both the top and bottom on. I was also surprised when they put "bite turbos" on the backs of my two front top teeth for my deep bite. The turbos took such a long time to get used to, and all my tongue could do was fidget with them. Almost two months later I still have a slight lisp, but it's to the point where I'm the only one who notices it. I'll post some terrible quality photos soon.

Braces in college isn't easy. I have to scavenge in my dining commons for soft food, and presenting with a lisp isn't fun. But, I keep reminding myself that now is a good time to have them because not much is going on in my life. It's now or never.

P.S. I absolutely love this board! It has made me have hope that my canine will come down and move into place!

Now for some before pictures:

In the above photo you can see my baby tooth (it's tiny)

The above is a good photo of my deep bite. Looking back at this it looks as though my front teeth are very long!

This one shows the angle of my bottom teeth. My orthodontist says they are angled inwards due to the deep bite. They're basically straight now.

So now I'm going to talk about my first month in braces.
Here is a picture right after I got them on.
Image
You can see a slight gap due to the turbos on the right there. The arch wire also looks a little wavey. I saw this go away in a few weeks, or maybe I just got used to it. I chose blue as my first color because I heard that dark bright colors made your teeth look whiter. I also just really liked that color blue and why not make yourself happy after such an experience?
I'm sorry the pictures are so blurry and not very good of how my actual teeth look with open mouth views. I'll definitely be taking better pictures now that I have people to show them too!
Here's a picture a few days before my first adjustment.
Image
I see a lot of progress. My wire seemed to have straightened a bit, and that gap from before closed a bit as my molars began "growing" again. At this point my molars only touched a little bit. Like if I moved my jaw a certain way I could bite down and they'd touch. But nothing major, I knew I wouldn't be getting the turbos off anytime soon. :|

And then, I went in for my first adjustment on September 24th. They did a lot to my mouth at this point.
I had a spring put on to make room for my lower cuspid to straighten. (It is angled inwards because it doesn't have room to straighten). I also had a power chain put on. It's in my lower right side and is pulling teeth together and holding them there. It goes from my back molar to three teeth from the back. (Not sure on terms, sorry. ) I also have some ties on two of my top left teeth, these are twisting teeth because they seem to be a little rotated.
They changed the wire on my bottom teeth to the next size up, but my top teeth couldn't be changed due to the twisted teeth.
Here's a picture after my first adjustment.
Image
I went with a light blue this time. I almost immediately regretted it due to the fact that it made my teeth look very yellow.
As you can tell at this point that gap between the top and bottom arches is almost completely gone. You can see the spring a little on the bottom left side there. Immediately after they put the new wire on the bottom, my right side molars began to touch.

Now I have a question for everyone because this is what i'm currently going through.
During the day it seems as though my molars completely touch and my bottom front teeth don't touch the bite turbos at all, but in the morning I wake up and my bottom teeth are touching the bite turbos again. Is this normal? It drives me insane because I think that as long as I'm waking up and touching the turbos, I won't get them off.

My next appointment is October 24th, so I'm crossing my fingers that the turbos can come off! I'm also looking forward to talking more about my exposure surgery!

Better pictures are to come after my next adjustment, so sorry about the previous ones, they're terrible.

Hey Sarah :-1 Welcome to the board! You seem to have a wonderful attitude towards your braces. I’m in the same boat as you, in school with braces but it’s not a big deal to me at all…I actually kind of like them lol

Best of luck with the exposure surgery and with your journey altogether. Love the ligs by the way!

Seems you have made quite some progress already :)

I like the light blue elastics! I had them myself, but after 5 weeks they were more like.. mint green lol!

Thank you! It's definitely exciting!

I actually noticed that too about the light blue, they're starting to get a little tint of green to them! Not sure what I want to go with next but I was thinking to go back to a darker blue. :)

Just had my second adjustment and WOW do my teeth HURT!

I now have two springs, one in the same spot as before because there wasn't enough room made and one making space near my canine. The only thing exciting is that we're finally progressing so I can get my exposure surgery in December/January! Which is very exciting! I also got a heavier wire on the top, because they had to rotate some teeth to get it in.

But wow, I can't get over how much space has already been made next to my canine. The space has almost doubled in just the time it took me to drive back to school (1 hour). But I definitelyyyyy can feel that space being made.

Other than that, nothing else happened. Still have my bite turbos :| even though I haven't actually hit them with my bottom teeth in a month or so. Oh well, I can never tell they're there anymore anyways unless I'm presenting in class and I hear the lisp. But that might just be me picking up on it.

I'll have some new (good) pictures up soon. I just need to get through this pain for now and take plenty of advil. :(

Thanks Kimmie! The pain is definitely a lot less today, although I can't chew on anything. :( I've been eating more soft serve than normal food... can't say I'm complaining though!

Springs are definitely astounding! Both areas where I need them have changed drastically since I got them in. Wow it's crazy!
