Yes. If you are a surgery candidate, your bite will get worse before surgery. My TMJ symptoms got worse as my bite worsened.

Hi there! Yes, has Marisama mentioned, it does get worse before it gets better. What's happening is your teeth are being formed to where they should be as if your jaws were already corrected. This is beneficial in two ways: First, it means you need less treatment time after surgery! Secondly, and most importantly, it helps the surgeon guide your jaws into the perfect position for your new bite! :)

Hope this helps calm your worries!

My TMJ didn't get worse , but before braces The pain of my TMJ used to be every while but with braces my jaw pain every day and that is what my ortho informed me with to expect the pain , specially when teeth where moving during the first 4 months , now that I have been in braces for 6 months it is getting much better .

The clicking won't go away with braces and it is something not guaranteed to be solved with braces .

Clicking is really annoying me , Maybe some one who has completed their treatment can help with this question .

Hello everyone, thank you for your replies.
I am a surgery candidate that's what I posted it here and I thought some of you may have been in the same boat.

I was informed that none of the surgery was guaranteed to make my tmj better but my ortho said it could improve it!

for me yes. clicking/noises became more frequent as my pre-surgery braces treatment continued.

it wasn't particularly bother by it - more annoyed by the muscle spasms and my lips refusal to seal properly. orthognathic surgery doesn't mean the clicking sounds are guaranteed to go away, i was told there is a 30-40% chance some noise might remain, but the pain should be gone.

of course, everyone is different.

For sure. My TMJ pain has gone up and down since the braces and some days it is so much worse than it has ever been.

Some of my TMJ symptoms are much worse since I've been in braces. Mainly terrible neck ache, facial pressure and headaches, so painful they can keep me awake at night. I do yoga to relieve the knots in my neck and shoulders when it is at its worst.
Strangely enough since I've had the braces I haven't had a bout of serious jaw pain, just a bit of aching. I do get a lot of clicking and grating when I move my jaw though. I'll be glad when it's all over.
