Hi everyone - I really like this board!!!
I had my first follow up appt with invisalign today - so I have gone through 3 sets so far.
Today my ortho "filed" my teeth a bit - I think it is weird how I didn't even know I would have to do this!
What exactly was the point - to make room for my teeth to move?
I also asked if I would have to hvae any speedbumps put on my front teeth - he said in the 8th month. OH well.
I guess things are moving along...
had my first followup!

I am replying to my own message - I just took a closer look to see the filing wihtout the aligner on and I can really notice it in between 2 teeth! I don't think anyone else would obviously - has this happened to anyone else?
And also, has anyone's spaces gotten bigger? Or does invisalign work quick to move the teeth together?
I am getting nervous!

Don't be nervous lesley, IPR (interproximal reduction) is normal with invisalign and traditional braces. They do it because when the teeth move to the proper position some teeth are too big or have weird edges to fit correctly. I had IPR done on my canine teeth because they were stopping my lateral teeth from coming down.
The spaces made from IPR will be there until the affect teeth move. The spaces may become bigger during treatment if one of the affect teeth is moved away from the other tooth but its temporary until the other tooth is moved back also. In the end no one but you and your ortho will know it was done.
As for when its done Invisalign sends a sheet to the ortho with the places they think IPR needs to occur and when they think it should be done. Some orthos do it right away and some just wait and see if it really needs to happen. Either way is fine. The results seem to be the same regardless.
Congrats on your completion of your first batch of aligners!

I had mine done prior to my Invisalign impressions. I'm still waiting on my trays so I'm not sure if the ortho is doing any more slenderizing... but I do know it is very common.invisagirl wrote:

Is it painful?
I'm going to need this done also. Is it painful? Do they use novocaine or just do a bit of filing?
I never had IPR while in Invisalign but just had it at my last adjustment with braces between my two front teeth. It was a very small amount, maybe .5mm on each front tooth. It doesn't hurt at all but you can smell something. Smells very very faintly like hair burning or finger nails burning. It takes a bit of time to do this too, so expect your appointment to be longer.
