Self ligating brackets

#1 Post by DrDevo »

Do these type of brackets require the use of elastics throughout the orthodontic journey?

They do powerchains to close up spaces but they put them under the wire.

The self-ligating brackets do not need the elastic ligs like regular brackets do. If necessary for treatment, you may need elastics throughout your treatment.

Basically SL brackets mean you don't need the little elastics around the brackets. You may still need, and will be able to have powerchains between the brackets (behind the wire) and elastics to change your bite (ones that run from a top tooth to a bottom tooth somewhere in your mouth depending on what they want to change). I have SL brackets and they have the hooks for the elastics to change my bite even though I havn't got the elastics yet.

Ligatures - NO
Interarch elastics - MAYBE/likely YES (depending on your treatment goals)
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

I have no formal dental or orthodontic education. Hence, all opinions expressed by me on this forum are those of an "informed consumer" and by no means intended as an expert advice.

Is it always true? I had short powerchains about two months but my orthodontist put it over the wire (self ligating braces). Now I don't have them any longer. Instead I have springs.

It's not always true. That's just the answer I got when I asked how they handled powerchains with Damon braces. Apparently it varies.
