wire ties = extreme discomfort

#1 Post by Rusty'sMom »

To date the the discomfort I have experienced while sitting in the ortho's chair has been minimal...but today during a regular adjustment I was given two wire ties on my bottom braces to "encourage" movement in some stubborn slow-moving teeth. The tech said there would be some pressure, but it was pretty awful! It felt like I imagine it must feel to get hit in the teeth. The tool she was using to tighten the wire, and she had to use some serious strength of her own to do it, created a significant amount of pain. Fortunately, as soon as the wire was on it felt fine, and now hours later it still feels ok. I am going to pop some ibuprofen in anticipation of pain tomorrow. Had to share...hope I don't have to go through that again any time soon!

Rusty's Mom-
I haven't had those wires. Sounds like it was EXTREMELY painful.

I do have an elastic thread that they use to tie two teeth together, which cause me pain for the first few days.

I hope you're feeling better and the 2nd time wasn't too bad.

PS My new debrace date is 11-23.
Bottom braces: 9-1-10
Top Braces: 12-1-10, enamel
Debrace date:Top 12-12-11
Bottom: 1-5-2012

Wire ties are old school, but in a good way! My understanding is that they offer low friction and super control over the archwire, they can tighten a tie more or less depending on how much movement is desired. The downside is that they take much longer to place than o rings or doors, so the dentist has to balance time spent on the patient vs. what they are trying to achieve at that stage. If you have all ties, it sounds like you are getting primo care! :D
