Dental Wax throughout the treatment course?
I'm a little concerned is how dependent I am on dental wax. I need dental wax at night because I have on coil spring on top and coil spring on bottom. Even if I just put the wax on coil springs, it's not enough. I still need to put wax on my other metal or clear brackets. The inside of my lips still aren't used to the brackets--even though I generally don't wear wax during the day. But some days I'll need to wear wax during the day and some days I'm fine. But if I don't put dental wax at night, I wake up in the morning with my lips all scraped. Will I normally have to wear dental wax throughout my treatment? I know it depends on the person but I'm asking in general, do people wear wax the entire 2 years? I feel a little embarassed going every 3 weeks to my ortho office to ask for some more dental wax. So I end up buying but these costs all add up eventually since I tend to use more (due to spring coils).

I used a ton while I had a spring on one side and lingual buttons behind that. It just feels better to have it on. Especially at night. I buy the wax and ortho-sil from Dentakit, and if you buy three or four ten packs at a time it's not too expensive. Buying small packs from walmart and other places is a lot more expensive. But if your ortho gives it for free, don't feel bad about picking up a bunch at a time. I'm about 18 months in and just bought another pack of ortho-sil and frequently put it on one specific tooth at night. Do what makes you feel better.

I hope that I will get use to my brackets later on during the treatment and not have to use it so much..

Just an update. I now don't need to use the dental wax much--particularly now that the spring coil was taken off 3 weeks ago. It made such a difference in the appearance of my teeth as well as no more dealing with the dental wax. Sometimes, if a wire pokes, I'll put the wax on it to stop bothering the inside of my cheek. I never thought this day would arrive when I wouldn't need any dental wax.

I went through a period of about 4 months where I was using wax like my life depended on it, and was very conscious of it like you are. At about the 18 month mark, I suddenly stopped using it and now have an arsenal of the stuff that looks like it won't get used! It just goes in phases, don't feel bad about it!
