Shouldn't 'centric occlusion' occur while jaw is relaxed?

#1 Post by dayeangphurr »

What is an Ideal bite?
It is the type of bite we refer to as a “minimal stress, minimal adaptation, least destructive” type of bite. It occurs when your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is seated fully into the socket (fossa), in a comfortable, relaxed position and when the muscles are relaxed – all of your teeth should touch simultaneously.

I have a class 1 occlusion - from previous orthodontic work done years ago, however, my teeth don't align into 'centric occlusion' when my jaw is relaxed. Therefore, in order for me to achieve 'maximum intercuspation', I have to retrude my mandible - which is posturing and uncomfortable. Is this typical? And should it be this strenuous? In comparison to the definition above, my 'occlusion' or bite doesn't seem correct. I feel baffled.

In other words, my bite doesn't properly align when my jaw is in a natural, relaxed position.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Oh god. Noway do my teeth align when my jaws are relaxed. I need to pull my lower jaw backwards. Always have. However this does not cause me any discomfort. I've been doing it my whole life both before and after braces.

Thanks for the response TumbleDryLow.

You may or may not have this, but do you have any signs of bruxism?
