Hi Klobird :-1

Wow - thank you so much for your kind words! I know I tend to ramble on a bit in my braces story, but if anything in there helps anyone to get over their trepidation about getting braces, then I know it's worth it. The Damon Q brackets you're getting are the same ones I got when I first got braced. They're rather small and unobtrusive and, like you said, self-ligating so you can eat to your heart's content without worrying about staining. I did end up changing my upper brackets to Radiance clear ones, but still kept the metal Damons on the bottom.

I got my braces purely on impulse. I was on vacation with a friend who had just gotten hers off after 18 months, and literally, the day after my plane landed back at home, I was on the phone to an orthodontist and got an appointment that same day for a consultation. A few days later, I got a second consultation and got braced 2 weeks after that. No time to think too much, which is best for me. :D Of course, I had a bazillion and one other questions during that two-week period, so I was on the phone with the ortho every other day. I'm sure they were glad once I got in there and got it over with. My orthodontist said that adults are much more difficult to work with than kids (well, maybe not those exact words, but you get my drift). I think it's a "control issue"; plus the fact that most of us are paying out of pocket for these, and want to know ever...single...itty...bitty...thing they're doing; why they're doing it; how long it will take, etc. The adult equivalent of "Are we there yet?"

You sound like you already have a positive attitude about all this and let me tell you, that is half the battle taken care of. Just knowing you're taking steps to correct something you've hated for a long time helps a ton, and will carry you through the 24-ish months when your teeth hurt... when you get ulcers inside your mouth from brackets rubbing or wires poking... and especially when you see absolutely NO movement whatsoever. Those with a positive attitude have a much better experience and can "roll with the punches" more so than those who go into this negatively.

Regarding spacers, bite turbos, etc., just remember those things are only temporary. I needed 2 spacers, and I felt no pain whatsoever while they were in (though I did feel some pain as they were trying to shove them between my teeth!) I never needed bite turbos because my overjet was so big, there was no way in HECK they would ever bang into my lower brackets. haha

I'm by no means an expert; I only know what I've experienced over the past year, but you can ask me anything you want and I'll help you as best as I can. I agree this is a wonderful site, and I've "met" some really great, supportive people here!

Welcome to the club! :-)o

Cathy has it nailed......so much of this is attitude. A couple of additions..... (it is the iBorg way) warm salt water rinses really help heal those pesky blisters. Wax helps prevents them.

And yes.....braces are a pain but getting your teeth "right" can make a great improvement in your life.

Thank-you Cathy for responding to my blog...I am going to start my own "journal" soon.

I loved what you said that we adults are the kid version of "Are we there yet?"...I had several note cards full of questions that I took to my initial free consultation! And then the assistant told me that she was "glad" I had so many "good" questions, I just told her that I wanted to know what I was spending so much money on, and she sort of just kind of rolled her eyes ever so slightly--like oh boy--here we go...

So have any of you regretted getting braces? I guess that's what I am wondering most of all---I still have 3 weeks until spacers...

Anyway, I am looking forward to getting to know all of you...I think I will start my own journal now and title it "Braces at 55?!!"

Thanks again for responding and for sharing your story---it really does help those of us just starting on our journey..

Mike is so right about the warm salt water rinses. They really helped me tremendously in the early days when my teeth started moving and brackets were rubbing like crazy. I've also had some luck with Anbesol. I put some on a Q-tip and hold it against the sore spot until it's numb, then wad up some silicone wax onto my brackets (the regular wax doesn't stick well for me) and go on about my day. Works wonders!

I will admit there has been only ONE day in the past year that I've ever uttered the words "Get these things OFF already!" but it turns out I was wearing an elastic that was much tighter than the other ones I've worn, so once I swapped it for a different one, all was well in the world. :D I've never, ever regretted getting them for a minute.

Keeping a list of questions is fantastic. I always have a bunch I want to ask, but once I get in there, they move so fast I forget what I want to ask. My orthodontist isn't a chatty guy, so if I never ask...he probably wouldn't say anything to me. But i think as long as you aren't pushy, or make them feel like you're questioning their abilities... Ask away!

Since you've already perused the boards a bit, you probably already know that there are a lot of us "mature" brace-wearers. :D

I have one more question---How do you get that ticker factory thing on your blog that shows how long you've been in braces?

Go to tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. After you're done it will give you a link that you should copy. Then go to "User Control Panel", "Edit Profile", and "Edit Signature", and paste it into the empty block for your signature.

Hi Cathy!

A belated congrats on reaching the one year mark. :jump: It goes by quick when you're among friends, doesn't it? By you latest pics, it really looks like you have less than another whole year to go...but I'm no ortho. It's amazing how quickly those elastics change the bite situation when you wear them faithfully. Keep up the great attitude... 8)

By the way...as you can see by my ticker, I'm done now!...at least with the braces part. I'll be commencing my restorative work shortly, and I'll be in retainers for life! My complete de-banding story will be up shortly...

Hi Mike!

From your lips to my ortho's ears...! I have a strong feeling that I won't know I'm being debanded until I sit my butt in the chair for an adjustment. I would hope he'd at least give me some notice so I could set aside enough time.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!! :-)o I cannot wait to read your de-bracing story, as well as your experience with retainers. Will you be documenting your restorative work, too? I'd love to hear how that goes, as I'm considering a little bit of that, myself... WAY down the line. My upper-right premolar is 90% filling, which makes it appear grey in appearance, so I'd like that changed to white (or, in my case, OFF-white). The rest I can live with.

(Isn't it funny how most of us didn't think our teeth were "that bad" to begin with... and now that we have braces, we nit-pick every single thing we see that we think needs improving?) I never knew what a midline was before... now I'm ultra-concerned about mine.

I just re-read your entire story, and didn't realize that you and I both used the Jaguar elastics... and both got to remove the ones on the left after a month or so. Whoa - my right side bite is so jacked up right now. My upper right canine is either too long or too pushed in, and keeps banging my lower teeth (thankfully, though, not the brackets themselves). My midline is worse than it was to begin with. However... no more overjet, and the gaps are just about gone. :jump: I want him to stick on another small powerchain and lasso those buggers closed already.

Hi Cathy! I was looking through your story/my near future and you mentioned that you wondered if your teeth would even show when the overjet was fixed since your top lip is so used to being further out.. this is something I wonder about all the time! I feel like nobody really understands what I'm talking about if I decide to explain that particular worry. So I have to ask, now that your overjet and slanting are perfect, how's the smile? :D

Hi Cathy! Congratulations on getting your braces and being so positive about it! I'm almost 19 and am getting mine put on in one week. We seem to have really similar teeth - lining up (mostly) in the back, but my top front teeth jut out a little from the bottom ones, and my jaws are a little misaligned. I'm extremely nervous because my orthodontist says I should get four extractions once the braces are put on, then maybe jaw surgeru if that doesn't fix my problems, but I know so little about what has to happen. :( It's nice to be able to read other people's stories and see how they're doing - your braces look great!

Hi Roboto- :-1

My smile, believe it or not, is so much better than before! Because my front teeth stuck out so much, my smile looked very “narrow”, and you couldn’t really see my side or back teeth. Now, although things are still a bit crooked since they’re working on my bite, my smile is much wider than before, and more of my teeth are visible. My lips also look fuller, which is another plus! After my adjustment tomorrow, I’ll post a comparison pic for you to see. As for my profile, I don’t see much of a difference (which is a GOOD thing, since my profile with my mouth closed was never an issue for me. With it open… that’s another story…)

Hi Bridget- :-1

Welcome to the Forum!! I totally understand your apprehension at having extractions, but there are SO many people on here who have had them, and their teeth look so fabulous afterward. When I got my initial pictures taken, the girl in the office told me she had 8 teeth pulled, and she had the most beautiful smile! Sometimes, we can’t avoid them. My extraction was a piece of cake (thanks to nitrous oxide); no swelling, bruising or infection. Here’s hoping you won’t have to have the jaw surgery, but if you do, you’re young enough that you’ll probably heal very well and very quickly.

I notice that you joined this Forum on 4/9/11 – my one-year BRACEVERSARY! The time really has flown by. Don’t be afraid to ask your orthodontist any questions you feel need to be answered. I know, it’s intimidating sometimes, but sometimes I think they don’t understand what a huge undertaking this is for us; especially control-freak adults who are paying out-of-pocket for them (raises hand…) Write your questions down, if you tend to forget them once you’re sitting in the chair (like me). I was the queen of the "When will my gap close?" question for a while until I saw it was kind of irritating my ortho. I may try to psych him out tomorrow and tell him, "I have a question..." (even though I don't really have any) I like to mess with him like that...

Good luck to you, and I look forward to reading your story! Start taking pics now so that you’ll have something to compare down the line.

Hi Roboto!

Here's a comparison pic of my first hour in braces (April 2010) and a pic I took earlier this month (April 2011). As you can see, my lips are bit fuller, and you can see more of my teeth. And I'm hoping it will get even better when the leveling and aligning phase is complete. My "slanting" is by no means perfect, as you will see in the pics in my next post...

12th Adjustment: One Year Down! New “Legos” and New Elastics Configuration

One year down… hopefully only one more to go!

After the whole “bite down” spiel, he said, “This is looking really good. You can stop this elastic,” (meaning the one on the right; the only one I was using), and I was ecstatic… :-* for about 2 seconds. He turned right around and told the assistant, “Drop some hooks on the lower 4s, and put a C-chain on the top.” I knew what that meant… more elastic wear! :yuck: So, she stuck the hooks into my Damons (like building Lego blocks), and now I’m back to wearing them on both sides, in an inverted triangle configuration. I’m not in any discomfort yet, but I can tell these things are going to rub like crazy. My gums around the upper elastic-ed area are a bit red and "itchy" right now, so I know somethin's going on there.

I managed to sneak in a quick question and asked, “Are these supposed to help level my left side?” and he said, “Yep!” (Guess that’s all I would get out of him today.) I think it's going to take a bit of practice to be able to put them in and take them out without a mirror.

So, that’s about it. Nothing exciting this time, but I’m happy to see some sort of progress. His assistant told me that I may eventually get a zig-zag configuration, which I believe is to keep the bite in place. I anticipate losing a lot of weight during that period.

A few pics (including one of the hook, complete with yellow dot!)
