Retainers

#1 Post by loradora »

I'm 50+ with lower braces only. When I'm finished with the braces, the ortho wants to give me both an upper and lower retainer. Today he asked me if I wanted a permanent or removable retainer on the lower teeth. The upper will be removable. Any recommendations? I'm thinking that I'll go with the removable because I'm sick and tired of having crap in my mouth.

If he thinks it'll be sufficient, go with the removable. I have a bonded retainer and it's impossible to adequately clean behind because I can't see it at all (it's on my top row).

There are merits to both types of retainers but the best one will depend on what movements the retainers are intended to hold. For instance, if there was a lot of vertical change, the removable retainer may not be able to hold the position as well. Speak to your doctor to discuss what may be best for your particular situation :).

Thanks Dr. Tam. I will do that on my next visit. My main problem was crowding of the lower front teeth and they removed one tooth. We're now working to close the gap. I'd definitely prefer removable, but we'll see what he has to say.

Considering he has given you the choice, then I assume he feels either one will accomplish what you need it to. In that case, i'd go with the removable and be sure to wear it exactly as he prescribes.
