got veneers but need braces!!

#1 Post by ghostrider »

Hey everyone, this is my first topic on this site.....

So, I had braces(crowded teeth and overjet due to smaller lower jaw) for a year when i was in the 9th grade, got them off in 10th grade, but didnt wear retainers enough, so one of my upper front teeth overlapped the two neighboring teeth....also lower teeth got crowded again....and a bit of overjet remained somehow.... :(

I am 18 now, last year in december I got composite veneers on upper and lower teeth....the dentist suggested them cuz i was not interested in getting braces again...my teeth were shaved down pretty much as my teeth were sensitive for 1-2 weeks after getting veneers.....but i hate them now as overjet seems more now, and i hate my smile now....

I wish to get braces (dont want surgery), ready for any extractions, but can i get them on top of composite veneers or will i have to remove them?...if i remove them wont the teeth be too sensitive?......my cosmetic dentist said i could get root canals on top teeth and then porcelain veneers to make them look ok......but i dont like this option.....Please HELP!! :(

P.S. i also have a slight overbite of about 40% which my previous dentist said was ok....and overjet is 5mm for tooth which is overlapping, for the other front tooth its 2-3mm

Hopefully one of the orthos that frequent this site can help you but I am curious- Why would the dentist recommend root canals and then veneers? Are the teeth healthy?

I second what Snow said, hopefully one of the orthos who posts here will see this and have some advice. I am not sure what I'd do in your shoes, since I wouldn't get veneers at all, I'd rather have braces again more than once instead of doing cosmetic restorations. The thing is - even if you get braces again to restore your alignment, you'll either have to keep the veneers or replace them, I don't think it's possible to remove veneers and have your teeth remain healthy and look good...tooth structure is removed to fit veneers so even if your teeth are not sensitive, I don't think they'd look right 'naked'.

Are the veneers - and your teeth - still in good shape? If so then you could probably have treatment and just leave them as is - if the bond will stick to them that is. If you need cosmetic refinements after braces, I'm sure that wouldn't be complicated since you already have a cosmetic dentist :)

If the teeth were built up substantially to change their orientation (correct crowding/overlapping, etc) then it is likely for the best result that the bonding will need to be removed to reveal the original position of the teeth. All of the bonding doesnt necessarily have to be removed but at least most and again enough to reveal the normal tooth form. then brackets can be bonded to the teeth and the teeth moved to the ideal position via orthodontics. At that point the teeth may need new veneers (maybe not though) The teeth wont necessarily be sensitive but there is always a possibility.

RCT's were probably discussed since in order to dhape the teeth enough to correct the crowding/overlap with porc veneers the teeth would have to be shaped to the extent that the nerve chamber would be exposed thus necessitating RCT treatment.

thnx a lot evry1, especially drrick !!!! and yeah the rct is for the same reason you mentioned.......but my question is, wont the bonding break if i get braces on them? i got the composite veneers in december 2009

We bond brackets to composite bonding, porcelain, etc all the time. It wont necessarily break. In fact it is rare that it breaks -- I really hope I didnt jinx you there

When I was 18 I had one veneer placed on my right 2nd tooth beside my front tooth since it was the only tooth that was crooked. They shaved it down a bit but not a drastic amount.
5 years later I have jaw surgery and have to have the veneer removed to have the braces put on. The shaved tooth looks a little weird but once it straightened out it looks 90% normal. I still think I am going to need another veneer on it just because I want it to look 100% but my ortho seems to think it would be fine without one. I guess it all depends on how much the tooth was shaved down and how you feel about your teeth when the braces come off.
