3rd Adjustment (7-16-10)

I had a pretty good visit today. There was a 6-year-old little girl (going on about 12, from the way she was talking) who was getting braces and headgear, and she was just adorable. Asked a million-and-one questions, and very patiently watched her toothbrushing video while wearing her headgear (with a pink strap).

I got a new wire on the bottom (.016/.022), and kept the same wire on top (also .016/.022). As far as progress goes, he said, “Looking good!” That’s about it.

Oh wait… there is a little something else…

Taa Daa!!! I GOT MY RADIANCE BRACKETS!!!

Some of you may have seen my thread in Metal Mouth lamenting my decision to change to ceramics, or not. I made up my mind that this is something I REALLY wanted to do, and could not get it out of my head.

When I walked in, ortho’s wife was at the front desk and asked if I’d taken any pics of my “last day with metal top brackets”. She was very nice and sympathetic, and said that it didn’t bother them a bit to change them, as long as I was happy. She gave me the bad news of the additional cost: $700!! Aack! But… I had a plan… I asked if I could get a bit of a break on that if I paid off my balance in full today. She said, “Oh, of course!” They normally give you a 10% discount if you pay in full within the first month, but she waived that “first month” policy for me. So, instead of paying $700, I got them for about $215 (even less than the cost of the brackets alone).

Doc came over with two ceramics models: One Clarity SL and one Clarity all clear (w/ligs). He explained the differences between the two, and then mentioned that he had another one… all clear… and I said, “Radiance? That’s the one I’d like.” He didn’t flinch at all, but explained that the archwire usually gets better torque when it’s metal on metal (as with the Clarity SL metal slot), instead of metal on ceramic, where it can sometimes break. I asked if he could still give them to me, and I’d take that chance. He said, “No problem at all. Just be really careful with them. I know you’re careful with your teeth, anyway.”

So, we proceeded. He did what I thought was just opening up the bracket doors and removing the wire. Then he had to attend to the little girl, and after a couple of minutes, I ran my tongue over my upper teeth and noticed the brackets were GONE! I didn’t even feel him take them off! The sanding down of the bonding, though… yes, I did feel that. I had a couple teeth that were super-sensitive, so my butt flew out of the chair a bit with those. As I was rinsing the gritty stuff from my teeth, I looked in the mirror and was so surprised at how much better my teeth looked already. Why do they look bigger? I know they haven’t grown any. I also noticed that there was NO difference in coloring between the tooth area under the bracket vs. around the bracket from my using Colgate Baking Soda w/Peroxide toothpaste.

The brackets were put on with no problem (the whole top row, except for the very last one in the back that doesn’t show), and he put my old archwire back in (the same one he just took out – the .016/.022). He also put a powerchain back on over my gap, only this time instead of hooking it onto just the “hook”, it’s around the whole bracket now. He asked how they felt, and honestly, I said, “Doesn’t feel any different from my other adjustments,” and he said, “Good. That’s how we want it.” As I got up to leave, he kind of laughed and said, “Make sure you brush, brush, brush to get those colors off.” I told him, “Thanks for telling me THIS TIME. I had no idea what they were the last time.” These colors aren’t just little dots – they’re more like stripes. (I’m having a doozie of a time getting off all the colors, so please ignore them in the pic.) Before I left, I thanked him again for changing them for me, and for his patience with my indecisiveness. He just smiled and said, “I just want you to be happy.” Sounded like a henpecked husband – LOL!

I LOVE THESE BRACES!!! They are so purty, and are a good incentive to keep my teeth as white as possible. They are a bit higher than my other ones, and I have hooks on the canines and first two molars, but I honestly don’t “feel” them like I did (and still do) my metals. (Yeah... as I type this, I do feel a little bit of rubbing on the inside of my upper lip, so better get that wax ready!)

OH… lig colors. She started putting them on and I asked her “What color are you using?” She said, “Clear. I figured since you wanted clear brackets, you wanted clear ligs.” I told her “Yes… for now.” Doc told her (kiddingly) “You don’t want to use the new one we got in – the bright orange one?” He was in an exceptionally good mood today. I think it had to do with the precocious child he had there. (NO... not ME!! LOL!) She was just adorable and asked him even more questions than I usually do!

Thank you all for your support!! Now I'll be able to go to my concer tomorrow night (Color Me Badd / All-4-One / Shai) and take pics to my heart's content and not be self-conscious.

Hi Cathy~

I love the new brackets! I love that you are so excited about them. I was going to send you my photos but you can't really see the difference in the sizes so I have been trying to take new ones.

Well worth the extra money, right?

Oh yeah...!! SO worth it, even as I sit here loading up the canine brackets with wax (as I had expected I'd have to do). This actually worked out better because I paid LESS for them now than I would have 3 months ago. So, so happy. :D :D :D

Hi Cathy :D

WOW!!! You new brackets look AWESOME! I was surprised to read that you were considering this change, because you seemed so well adjusted to the metal. Just curious - Did you grow self-conscious with the metal brackets? Anyway, the clear ones look great, and I agree with your ortho: Whatever makes you happy... 8) I'm glad the whole thing worked out for ya.

Keep smiling...and have lots of fun at the concert!

Can't wait to see you try some colored ligs...

Mornin' Mike!

I was actually very content with the metal brackets... then all of a sudden I had a ton of family functions to go to (with family from the mainland visiting), and a million pictures were taken. Because I have small teeth and a small smile, the brackets make my mouth look almost completely BLACK. You see almost no whiteness of my teeth at all. So yes, I began to feel extremely self-conscious. I got to thinking that maybe I should've gone with my very first instinct (ceramics), so I called the office and discussed it with them. The steep price made me waffle a few times on my decision, but I figured out a way to do it; he was willing to do it, and here I am! Had to keep the metals on the bottom, though, but I don't mind since nobody sees those.

My discoveries in the past 20 hours: Scrambled eggs blend in very well with clear brackets; wheat toast does not, and it's not as easy to just "scrape" things out of them with your fingernail - you need to actually brush. My teeth never really stopped hurting from my last adjustment, so today they feel pretty sore. Dinner before the concert tonight should be fun.

Oh they are so nice Cathy! now I wish I'd gotten them too! At my ortho's office, there's also an extra fee to be paid for getting those ceramic self ligating brackets. :o

Donna, msbee, MegP60+: Thank you!!

msbee - they're actually not self-ligating! haha I have clear ligs on them. I've been trying to be especially careful not to stain them, but I'm sure that won't last long, and I'll eat a big ole plate of spaghetti, or something. Maybe I'll do that the week before my next appointment, and see what happens.

I did have to contend with a good deal of rubbing brackets the first day, but they feel great today. I took a whole bunch of pics yesterday... blew them up with telephoto... and still could barely see them. Best $200+ I've ever spent!

Change to Innovation Ceramic Brackets

#102 Post by Tiffsmile »

Cathy -

Just got my braces on 2 months ago in addition to a bicuspid extraction. I have all metal Innovation SL brackets, but haven't received one good comment. I am also 42 and normally have a very healthy self esteem, but these metal brackets are taking their toll on me. I was thinking about asking for ceramic on just the first top 4 teeth to offset the hideousness of the metal. Do you know anything about Innovation ceramic brackets? These are what my ortho carries.

Thanks,
Tiff

Hi Tiff-

Welcome and Congratulations! I can honestly say I know exactly how you feel. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the Inovation C ceramic brackets, but you can do a google search because I know there's tons of information out there about them.

If you do decide to change, I have to warn you that there's a possibility that your orthodontist will charge you for the extra work. I'm not sure if he/she also charges extra for the brackets themselves. In my case, my brackets were going to cost $300 (whether I got them from the very beginning, or later), along with the cost of removing the old brackets, debonding (taking the glue off), and rebonding the new ones. The total cost for me was going to be $700. Fortunately, I was able to make a deal to pay off my whole balance, in exchange for a 10% discount, and everything worked out fine. You may be one of the lucky ones where your ortho doesn't charge to change brackets. :D

Talk to your orthodontist about it, and see what he/she says. You're pretty early in your treatment, so it may be possible without putting you too far behind in your treatment. Also, when people get ceramics on their top teeth, they normally do the front 6 (called the "social 6") at least, and not just 4. Most people's smiles span at least 6 teeth. (Mine spans 8, but since I had one tooth pulled, now it's down to 7 teeth and a gap. haha) My orthodontist went ahead and replaced the entire top row of brackets except for the very last one (2nd to last molars in the back), for a total of 11.

I would say to go ahead and do a little bit of research, and then have an honest talk with them. I did, and it helped me tremendously. I was able to go in there and ask for what I wanted with confidence.

Good luck, and keep me posted!!

More questions

#104 Post by Tiffsmile »

Thanks for the advice, Cathy. I have another question.....I believe you said you switched to the Radiance bracket; have you had any problems with yellow staining? I read a post on another braces forum and the individual said her ceramic braces looked like "big blobs of plaque" on her teeth, and I'm assuming she kept her teeth clean. Any problems with this?

I've enjoyed reading your posts. Thanks for the prompt response.

Hi Tiff-

Thanks! As far as staining goes, the brackets themselves do not stain. It's the ligatures (little rubber bands) that are around them that can stain when you eat things like spaghetti sauce, curry, etc., and when you drink a lot of coffee, tea and dark colored soda. I've only had them about a week, and I've been trying my hardest to avoid those things. That said... I'm failing miserably. I've already eaten spaghetti, french fries w/ketchup (tomato sauce), and drank Pepsi. It helps if you can drink such things with a straw so that the majority of it bypasses your front teeth.

My teeth stain really easily from these things, so I make sure I brush at least twice a day; preferably three. Some ceramic brackets are more yellow-ish in color, I think, so they may give off the impression of looking dingier.

Hope this helps!
-Cathy
