I don't plan to wear my retainers. can my teeth be glued?
I'm done with my orthodontic work but I don't plan to wear my retainers in the long run.
Can someone tell me what the approximate cost of glued-in retainers is? I just need to hold the bottom front teeth in place. I don't want gaps.

Really, your ortho doesn't do bonded retainers? Well, get the removables from your ortho and wear them for the meantime, and call around to other orthos and see if you can get a bonded retainer from one of them. Explain that yours refuses to do bondeds and that's what you want. You may have to pay an additional fee but I can't imagine it would be that much - unless it is the same cost as a removable would be.
Well i hope you have a plan to be braced again in the future...cause thats what's going to happen if you don't wear your retainer. My ortho told me he'll do the bonded lower, but i also have to wear a removable. The bonded only covers a few of the front teeth...the rest can move without the essix or hawley. At least wear them at night.

how long is the retention phase supposed to last? and suppose I wear the retainers as I'm supposed to for a few years and then decide I'm not wearing retainers anymore. Will my teeth shift to the way they were before the braces?SDFD TSchott wrote:without the retention phase there is a 100% chance likeliehood that your teeth will shift again and your journey in braces will be a waste. Look at many people here who are getting braces for the second or even third time.

I wore my retainers on and off for close to 12 years and still ended having relaspe. I ended up repeating treatment almost 27 years later.
If you want to keep you smile looking the way they did when your braces came off, just follow your ortho's recommendations. I have an upper hawley and an orthodontic nightgard and a lower bonded retainer.
Good luck,
B

Started the journey for the second time on January 10th 2008~Ceramic uppers and metal lowers. Removed on June 2nd 2009.

Relapse is a sticky thing, it happens to most people to some degree, even people who never had treatment can go from having straight teeth to having crooked teeth or bite problems. Your teeth just move throughout your life, so retention tends to be something you have to just deal with forever.
I honestly don't see why it's such a big deal to wear something at night, and you might even not end up needing it EVERY night either. Your teeth will actually kind of tell you by either moving slightly, moving a LOT, or not moving at all. Compared to some people, my relapse isn't bad at all, but it's still relapse and it's still frustrating. It is NOWHERE NEAR as bad as what I started with but it's enough to interfere with my bite if I don't do something about it, so I chose to do something about it. When I'm done, I'll probably always have retainers, even just a few hours each night might be enough but it's better than ignoring the problem and being back at square one.
There are a TON of us second and even third timers here and for the most part it was due to lost or broken retainers, or simply just stopping with wearing them and following up with orthos.

Re: I don't plan to wear my retainers. can my teeth be glued
I believe my ortho charges $250 for a bonded retainers. But like a previous poster said, they don't cover all the teeth, just the front ones. You will need a regular retainer and that will probably be an additional cost.fff wrote:I'm done with my orthodontic work but I don't plan to wear my retainers in the long run.

How long are you planning on wearing them?
You won't have to wear your retainers everyday, all day for the rest of your life. After your initial time of wearing the retainers, you can drastically cut back on the time you wear them. Then they can be used to retain the position of the teeth. My co-worker got her braces off almost 5 years ago. She wore the retainers as instructed and now, will wear them usually once a week. So far so good.

Retention phase depends on the severity of your case and the ortho. I think my ortho errs on the side of caution thus told me that I must wear my retainer 24/7 for the first year then every night for life.fff wrote:how long is the retention phase supposed to last? and suppose I wear the retainers as I'm supposed to for a few years and then decide I'm not wearing retainers anymore. As for relapse...that's going to be variable as well. You may have a lot, you may have a little. Everyones teeth move to some extent over time. Not wearing your retainer will mean at least some relapse. Maybe not tomorrow or in a few year, but one day you will wake up and realize things aren't straight anymore.
Just curious. Why don't you want to wear a removable retainer?
Some orthos don't like to give their patients bonded retainers due to the added difficulty of flossing around them. But i would guess if you requested it, they can do it for you at your cost.fff wrote:That's incorrect. Can someone answer my question?
