I'm much more afraid that I wake up too early.
that's much more likely...although most people don't remember anything when they wake up during surgery.
but I'm not sure if that should reassure me...would I have the surgery if there was no anesthesia but they somehow made sure I don't remember it?

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a back-of-my-mind concern -- that's normal. I've had surgery before, but I know I'll always worry. You have to have faith that all of your doctors are well-trained and that in case of emergency, you're in the best possible place.

The thought crossed my mind that there might be some complication with the anesthesia or something and I might just DIE. My surgeon reassured me that in 30 years, he hadn't had anyone die during oral surgery. There can be complications, but they are set up to deal with those things. You might bleed too much or something, which no one wants, but they can handle it!

I had my surgery in Jan., and I went so far as to fill out Valentines for my kids just in case! That sounds silly now that I'm over and done with surgery, but when it's your life in the operating room - well, it's easy to have a little fear of the worst. Stay postitive, though! Think of the benefits of surgery and how your life will be better post-op. :D

Honestly anesthesia is really cool. I was really concerned about it to. Here how it goes. You will be setup on the operation table and the anesthesist will start to manipulate your iv then... you will wake up. That's exactly my experience with anesthesia. No memory or feeling of going out or being out. You'll tell yourself euhhh ?? already over ?? Anesthesia sleep is deep. You will be confused for about a minute or two then everything will become clearer. Yes there might be side effects but they are really rare. I just got sarpe 3 days ago and recovering really well. Hope this help

I am much more afraid of waking up during surgery, that is one of the things I fear about surgery. I just want to be knocked out and not wake up during the entire thing.. My brother woke up when put out, it was when he had this big needle being put into his kidney, he has a defective kidney IDK what they were doing but he said he woke up during it and heard everyone in the room and felt a lot of pain with the needle being put into him.

I didn't wake up when I was knocked out for my wisdom teeth removed, but I am definitely scared of waking up during jaw surgery.

I know they have brain monotors now that can see if you are awake or not and they can put more in you to get you to sleep, but its not everywhere.

I think everyone to some sort of degree has fear of surgery and the anesthsia that you receive. Its not uncommon to be worried and I'm safely saying that you are not alone! trust your doctors that you have chosen and know that they are well trained for anything and everything that could happen during the OR and your surgery.

I am no exception to being scared. I think i was scared as well because it was my first major surgery on my jaw so I didn't know how I would react to all the meds that they were giving me and didn't know how I was going to be afterwards (allergic reactions, etc). but I made it out fine, I had a few complications with the antibiotics but my surgeon team kept me in till they figured out what was going on!

It will be okay believe me! You should search on here jfor a thread that was created last may. It may give you some reassurance and some good feelings to get yourself prepared for surgery!!! I know for sure it definetly helped me and the others that were preparing for surgery!!!

That was my one and only fear that I would not wake up it scared me more than what I looked like afterwards or any pain. I figured I could only deal with them when I experienced them!
I just couldnt get my head around the fact that they were going to break the structure of my mouth and yet I could still breath! It boggles me even now but hey look here I am!!!
I was glad though that there wasnt a big fuss made prior to me going under she never even told me she just said take some deep breaths I thought it was just clear oxygen but ta da!!! I was asleep!!! I have no memory at all of waking in the recovery room but obviously I must have come round enough I just remember waking up in a private room on a ward.
Its all pretty amazing really x

I had my surgery 4 days ago, and it was my second general anaesthetic to date. Both experiences were pretty similar in that I was petrified beforehand, but it turned out totally fine. Both times I don't remember coming around, I was just suddenly awake and sitting up, all done.

Like everyone else says here, you just have to have faith in your medical team and be confident that they'll look after you.
