Hi guys,
So I think I've decided to go with the lower jaw surgery route rather than a genioplasty so I can get the best results, not just physically but the health benefits too.
The maxillofacial surgeon I spoke to said my bite was fine my bottom set had been moved forward and now "hanged forward" to meet my top set. He wants my teeth to go back to the overbite position so I can have my lower jaw moved forward.
I was wondering would I even need a wire setup on my top arch if no treatment needs to be done? Obviously I'm not expecting a professional opinion here, but if you guys know of a case where this has happened I'd appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks
Braces on top and bottom?

Hi,
I'm pretty sure that you'll have to have the upper arch wired at least for surgery, as your surgeon will want to option of banding/stabilizing your bite post-surgery.
Most likely, upper brackets/wires will be necessary long before surgery but not necessarily at the same time as your lower arch. If you'd like to have the freedom of unbraced uppers until they absolutely have to be put on, I would talk to your ortho about his/her treatment plan for you.
When you say your bottom teeth were hanged forward, do you mean that they were tipped forward to mask the overbite?

Yeah exactly, they tip forward. I hadn't really noticed until my maxillofacial surgeon made a point of it. My bite is good, I think the plan is to move my lower teeth back and then move my lower jaw forward to correct the bite. Am I wrong in assuming that my top arch won't need to be altered?
That's a good idea and I suppose I won't know for sure until I ask my orthodontist. Cheers for the info though.
But if anyone has managed to avoid braces on both, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I believe that because your post-surgical bite must be close to ideal in order to heal correctly without shifting/tilting, you're most likely to have upper brackets installed. It would be nice to go without. I get that.
When they move your lowers back in prep for surgery, they'll also want to adjust your uppers into the most ideal post-surgical position. I would be very surprised to hear of patients going through this surgery without both upper and lower braces.
