braces broken...?

#1 Post by ryan1991 »

OK, at one side of my top set, there is excess wire sticking out the side... sticking into my cheek, which wasnt there before. At the opposide end, the wire has came of of the band... is this normal?

No, although it's fairly common it's not supposed to do that. Basically whats happened is your archwire has migrated to one side of your mouth (moved across in the brackets). Best thing to do is give your ortho's office a call, tell them what the situation is and they'll probably give you an "emergency" appointment to quickly fix it (only takes them a few minutes to sort out). I've had this problem twice so far, fortunately it only seems to happen with the thinner more flexible wires, so once you get a thicker wire it isn't a problem anymore!
Good Luck

Often it happens if your teeth have shifted a lot. Yeah, give them a call, and stick a blob of wax on the sharp bit in the meantime.

It might also be worth asking if they can put a stopper on the wire, to stop it wandering round again.

Yea, along with the stoppers, they can also bend the end of the wire so that it can't poke you. This is what my ortho did for me. And it works. It never hurts to ask if they will do it!!
