It has been positively frigid outside these past few days, Ken, it's awful! And not normal for this time of year. Oi!

Anyhow, I called Dr. Greer's office this morning about the broken powerchain, and they set up an "emergency" appointment at 1:30 this afternoon. So I went in. They put in a string type thing rather than a powerchain. And it really is a string, it's a lot like fishing line but with a bit more elasticity, and obviously softer, too.

Then Dr. G came over to take a look, make sure the assistant put it in the right way, did the adjustment...then she took a look at my mouth overall and said 'it's really working missy!' And, because it's 'really working' she put in another powerchain, on my top left side, haven't looked to see which teeth yet. And she also put me on tighter elastics, too. They're 3/16", 6-1/2 oz size. They're not too bad, though.

She said she still wants to see me in two weeks and to call if I have any problems with the string.

Meryaten: Yes, I enjoyed it immensely, though I didn't enjoy that powerchain breaking. :x

KK: Thank you so much!

Linda: I really am going there often. Good thing it's not all that out of the way, or I might be mad about the gasoline. And thank you!

I think so too, bracedagain. I think we should boycott the weathermen until we get some warmer temps. What do you say?

And, unfortunately, the elastic thread BROKE about an hour ago. I was not eating or anything, either, just like the other time I was just sitting there and felt something pop.

I don't know what it is! I, better than anyone, know that I have not chewed anything in two weeks, so it couldn't be that I'm being too rough. I'm not really upset about it, I'm just curious. Why won't anything hold lately? I don't think it's anything to do with how my ortho does her job...I have had no other problems aside from this little area of my mouth lately.

And yesterday I was just admiring how the gap on that tooth has closed. It will probably shift back without the string being there.

Anyhow, tomorrow morning I'm going to make ANOTHER call to my ortho. I'm betting this time they'll just say wait until my appointment on the 23rd, but I'm going to call just to let them know what's happened. If they can see me, fine, if they can't, I won't worry about it.

What I'm NOT looking forward to is the tenderness I'm going to start feeling when my tooth tries to shift back.

Thanks Ken! I get a huge kick out of those smilies you use. And my boycott of the weathermen is in full swing, I refuse to turn on the news now until they can give me some good weather predictions! :D

Anyhow. I called my ortho's office today, and one of the assistants answered. Dr. Greer is out today, however, Anne, who is her assistant with the most experience, was in so they said I could come in. I did, and she thinks that it might be something sharp in the cleat that's making the powerchain and the string keep breaking. So she put this thing---she told me what it was, I just can't remember what she called it--over the cleat to give it some padding, then put in another powerchain. If I have another problem I am to call about it, though they may end up waiting to fix it until my appointment. Then she said that they had called and told Dr. Greer about it, so everything Anne did was Dr. approved.

So...HOPEFULLY--problem solved!

I had my adjustment today.

It started out with Anne putting a bib on me when I sat in the chair. I said 'uh oh. The bib must mean business. Should I have taken a painkiller?'

She said yes, then offered me some tylenol, which I accepted.

Then they got out their torture devices.

My bottom molar in the back on the left side was not banded when the rest of my teeth were because they were waiting for it to move forward far enough. Well, it had moved far enough today, so I got a lovely band there. I'm not complaining, per se, but the WORST part of this braces experience was getting these darned molar bands on because of the way they do it. They work it on the tooth by having me bite on this bite tool really hard. I HATED it on my original band date and I HATED it today.

However, it wasn't all bad! No worries! Dr. Greer and Anne were gushing about the progress I have made. I also got another archwire on the bottom--the same size as the last one, an 8-2-2, but this one "does cooler stuff" (in Dr. Greer's words), first of all it had to encompass the band they just put on my back molar, second, it's going to do some rearranging of the molars on my left side (or so they tell me!).

They changed out my powerchains, and instead of the triangle elastics on the left side and the class II on the right, i've just got a class II elastic on the left side with the 3/16", 6-1/2 size elastic I was given a few weeks ago.

It's not as much pain as I thought, which is GREAT. And without that triangle elastic I get more options as far as eating goes. I'm excited! Pictures to come soon, not today, though, as I have a huge term paper that I need to work on. I will probably get to the pics tomorrow.

Thank you for your support! That powerchain held together nicely, in case you all were wondering.

Meryaten- Tenderness didn't last long at all! Two, maybe three days tops. I was able to eat my beloved STEAK--of which I have not been able to eat for about two months--four days after my appointment. Needless to say, I was excited.

Linda21- At least she offered me some tylenol! Hahaha. So you got off light, no molar bands, no spacers? That's interesting...and you DID luck out! People say spacers were really painful, mine were only tender. The molar bands were MUCH worse than getting the spacers.

I'm sorry I have not updated lately! I have reasons though. Number one, I had finals at school. College finals--especially now that I'm in the more advanced classes--are no joke. Plus I had not one, but TWO term papers to write.

However, that's all done now and summer has begun.

Why no update since then? Well....we got a new computer. And it's with WINDOWS VISTA. I don't like Vista much, just trying to get used to it. One of the downfalls of it is I can't have my old photo editor that I had on my other computer, so I'm having to search for a good one that is easy enough for me to figure out. And it's harder than it sounds! I don't like that Corel software, nor the update on HP image zone, and I don't have the money to get Adobe Photoshop. So any suggestions that any of you have would be greatly appreciated!

So today I finally had the time to hook up my old computer and edit my FIFTEEN MONTH anniversary photos (taken on May 2nd).

Here's a picture of my top teeth, of which I want to discuss an 'issue' I have.

Image

Ok. See the two front teeth? One is slightly behind the other and I have not noticed that until just recently. I'm really hoping it's fixed soon, because it's driving me nuts!

right side:

Image

Notice how the gap between the canine and molar are DECREASING on my left side:

Image

Here's the bottoms. Decreasing gaps, looking pretty darned good!

rotated? Hmm...

You can't tell from the front view:

Image

In fact, the front view looks fine. So I'm not sure that it's rotated...just slightly behind the other. I will definitely be mentioning it to Dr. Greer, just for my peace of mind more than anything, hahaha.

Filet mignon is ooooh so yum. You're right, however, it's expensive. :(

Those are some nice photos Jenn, your teeth look great! :D

I can see what you mean about the front teeth, and I have the same issue. I told my ortho the other day at my adjustment and he put a bend in the wire, and I think they're less overlapping now already, or maybe it's just my imagination. :P
Definitely bring it up, I'm glad I did because my ortho didn't have any plans for it until I mentioned my concern. :)

Hope all continues to go well.

Thank you SimInsomniac! I don't doubt my ortho knows what she is doing, but I'm curious about that particular tooth's movement, why it's happening, what she's planning, et cetera. It's not that I don't think she notices, though. Your experience certainly shows how it pays off to be proactive in treatment, though!

Meryaten: I noticed how it does distort the wire the other day when I looked at that picture. Then after I noticed that distortion, I now notice the difference when I run my tongue across the back of my teeth, it's definitely noticeable, you can't miss it!

KK: Thank you, ma'am! You too.

rage31: I adore, adore, ADORE your avatar!

linda21: Yes, it is a relief to get out of school! Don't get me wrong I love it and if I didn't I wouldn't be paying for it, but the constant work gets a little old after awhile.
I am very proud of how my progress has gone. I still have quite a bit to get accomplished and I don't know how long it's going to take, but I'm very pleased with how my teeth look as compared to the beginning.

Think she's right about the rotation? I guess since it's not anywhere but slightly behind my other tooth I didn't think so, but come to think of it, my final gaps are going to have to be closed SOMEhow, so rotation may be how she's doing it. Or she may be shortening the arch so my other tooth may be pushed back as well in the future.

Hmm...food for thought...

I went in for my 21st adjustment today (it's weird that I've had twice as many as some people who have had braces twice as long as I have, maybe I ought to quit counting?).

Dr. Greer was seeing a patient with retainer issues at the time, so Annie and I chatted about American Idol and Dancing with the Stars (two reality shows, for those of you who don't watch American TV).

I also opted for alternating colors this time, my favorite metallic green paired up with metallic purple.

Today, they took out my top archwire, put in another one with the same size, only sans the loops. Dr. Greer said they have done their job! Pics to come soon.

I did ask about my front teeth, and she said not to worry about it, that no, it's not anything to do with shortening my arch...and that it's going to even out in the end. I think she thought I was more worried about it than I really am because she kept saying it'll even out in the end. Maybe she thought I was panicking about it, I wasn't; I was curious. No biggie!

Anyhow, then she wanted a reminder of what kind of elastics I was wearing and I told her I was wearing the class II, 3/16" on the left side she was surprised and laughed, said "I love it when my patients know the terms!" Then sentenced me to the same, but on the left and right sides. Next time, she's doing something called 'leveling of the ridges,' which I didn't have time to ask about but am going to look up online.

Okay, I've taken the pictures and I'm going to post them, but first, I'm going to rant a bit. Not even about my teeth!

ALLERGY problems have been driving me nuts this year! I swear I haven't ever had it this bad. Lately my eyes have itched, I've had sinus headaches, runny nose...and another symptom. My mouth is itching, and it's usually the roof of my mouth or my tongue. I'm wondering if I developed an allergy to food I eat a lot, though I'm not so sure that would be a symptom of a food allergy. If it doesn't quit I may give in and go to the doctor about it.

Anyhow, I've been studying my pictures, and one little 'issue' I have as of late is how my top arch is not so rounded anymore. I'm trying not to be worried, I really do think it will be perfect by the time this is all over, I just wonder WHEN it's going to be all over, you know? I'm reminding myself of the original estimate, 20-26 months and a LOT can happen in 5-10 months, so I shouldn't be disheartened, nor should I think that my treatment's going to be longer than she thinks. However, of course, being me, I wonder.

Anyhow, here's a picture of my arch several months ago--last November, to be exact. It was by no means perfect, but there was...an arch there:

Image

Then here they are today. The first picture shows the teeth a little clearer, the second one shows how the arch is not-so-perfect.

ImageImage

Here's a look at my smile, and the PURPLE and GREEN ligs.

Image

Now on my right side, my bite has improved quite a bit, which I'm happy about. On the left is a picture of my right bite in march, and on the right is my right bite now. Note how it's not so open, less of an overjet, and the overall look is tighter, too.

ImageImage

Left side I've seen really great improvement that I'm really excited about! Huge gap closures and improvement on my bite has happened in a relatively short amount of time. On the left is a picture in March, right is a picture of today.

ImageImage

I'll do a comparison of the bottoms, though really here has not been much change there for awhile. Left is from April, right is from today.

Thank you MsTee!...and I notice your ticker there, congrats on having a debrace date set! Which reminds me, I'm going to go over and check your braces saga in just a second.

Linda21 Yes, I have noticed how my overjet has really improved. Now, if only my overbite would do the same thing! Getting better, though. Rationally, I know I will end out with a good looking arch, and I know this un-perfect look is because they're filling in the gaps. I think my emotional side likes to whine about how long that's going to take. Thank you for your reassurance!

Meryaten that's a good suggestion. I think I will ask her what is next on the agenda for my upper arch...just so I'm not in the dark, and see where I'm going compared to where I am. Maybe then that emotional part of me won't worry about it!

It's good to know that my itchy mouth isn't unusual in general allergy related stuff. My allergies are actually only a recent development...I was never bothered by them until about three years ago, and it seems like a new symptom pops up each Spring. This year, it's that itchy mouth.

KK thank you very much for your encouragement! Like I said, rationally I know that I am only making progress, and I agree, I will definitely talk to my ortho. She'll most likely tell me to wait just a few months for her magic to take effect.

rage I sure hope so! Thank you!

Well congratulations on starting your braces journey! And thank you for reading my story.

Reading a lot of these braces stories reminds me that I am doing the right thing, I think this site is a GREAT support system for that type of thing.

GOOD LUCK on your appointment on June 27th! I will keep looking for your braces saga and keep updated on your journey, too!

I did not update for my sixteen month anniversary, my mind was on other things.

A few weeks ago I had a dentist appointment, where, the hygenist, told me my teeth are beautifully taken care of (I'm very proud of that), no cavities. She also asked how long the original braces estimate was (20-26 months) and told me that Dr. Greer likes to run to the latter half of her estimates, almost NEVER allows for early removal. I still had hope, though, that maybe I'd get out a little early, maybe 20 or 22 months.

Today I had an ortho adjustment where they didn't do much (retied wires on the bottom), and then the ortho asked Anne, the assistant, to look up when they have me down for braces removal. Anne looked at the computer and said 'April of 08' and Dr. Greer said 'Looks like we're on track for then.'

I'm really, really, really trying not to be disappointed that my one year braces anniversary, which was in February, will not be my last year anniversary. I realize that my goal was perfect teeth, I guess it's just a little hard to hear that I most likely will have to wear my braces for the full 26 months.

I think I'll change my ticker to say April of 08 and have a countdown instead of a count up of how long I've had the braces. Maybe that will give me some more optimism? Who knows.

I'll get out of this funk in a few days, I guess I just need to give myself a kick in the rear like usual, hahaha.

Pictures to come later.
