Well it's finally happening. Next Monday 23/4 I have an appointment with my dentist to get my fillings removed (so I'll have the gap again :() but the following Monday 30/3 I have my orthodontist appointement where they are going to do all the measurements and impressions and such. :D

My question is, how long does it usually take an orthodontist between taking the impressions of my teeth and actually getting the braces on?

Hi Meryaten,

Thanks for the reply. No, I'm not going with Invisalign - my dentist and I have spoken at length and braces are the more practical and cheaper option.

And yes, the fillings I mentioned are just bonding between my front teeth to close the gap. I've never had any decay on any of my teeth in my 20 years of life :) It's funny, really - my teeth are really perfect (if I say so myself) except for the front gap, which is why I am hoping that the braces shouldn't take too long if that's all they have to fix.

Thanks for all the tips :D I'll definitely follow your advice.

It's going to be an exciting time for me for sure. I feel that once my teeth have been "fixed" then I will be much more confident than I am right now, knowing that although they look good they're not all real because of the fillings ;)

Tomorrow's the day, argh! I'm going to feel so awkward with gap teeth again after having "normal" looking teeth for two years. But I know it's the first step to real, proper, straight teeth. :D

I didn't have any front gaps at the beginning, but during the treatment I had several, and I had them closed several times, too.

When they put on the powerchains, it took just 1 day every time to close these gaps, at least visibly. I'm sure the roots took longer to move.

Well the fillings are off and I feel really stupid looking again. :D Can't wait for this time next week when I see the orthodontist and things start moving. My dentist said the maximum time would be two years with braces.....ah well, at least I have something to look forward to by the time I'm 22 :D

Great news! Had my orthodontist appointment yesterday. He looked at my teeth for a few minutes then told me it would not be a problem to close all my gaps completely. I’m going to have to have braces on upper and lower teeth, though. They took some x-rays of my mouth, then he said I’d be able to get the braces…on May 14! :D

I was kind of expecting a couple of months delay while they worked everything out, but I think two weeks is an amazing time between seeing the orthodontist for the fist time and being braced ;) All I have to do now is choose (on the day I get them put on) what type of braces to get. Should I get the traditional metal type or the smaller clear type? Any suggestions?

Thanks KK. I'm excited to begin the journey and those are some more great tips :)

The orthodontist also said I will probably have to have a bonded retainer behind my upper teeth once the braces are off - is this common? Also I will have to wear a removeable retainer too for a while.

I've decided to go with Stainless Steel braces. Most affordable option, and I don't mind the look at all. :) Only 10 days to go until they're on! (I already have my first tightening scheduled for July 14 so things are well on the move :))

March 15th was my consultation. Since I loved everyone right away and knew I was in the right place, they did my records there and then (impression set, digital photographs, wax bite, and a panoramic X-ray).

April 5th I had four fillings I needed done by my regular dentist (waiting on this is the reason it took so long from consult to braces!)

April 18th I had spacers put in

May 2nd I got top braces on

June 14th I have my first adjustment

Sometime in the hopefully not too distant future I get bottom braces.

That should give you some idea of a timetable but mine was a long delay (a day short of 7 weeks from consult to braces! because of needing fillings)

EDIT - and I see while I was writing that up you posted your exact timetable! Congrats!

Congrats to you too for getting yours on just recently :) I hope you get the bottom braces done soon. I'll be getting top and bottom done at once ;)

Got the letter today with my fees. Total cost is going to be $4535 which I suppose isn't too bad, considering I can pay it off over 2 years. I have to make a deposit of $1975, then make 16 payments of $160. Only 6 days to go until they're on...!
