Day 13 of Lower Jaw Surgery(Class III) - ABSOLUTELY NO PAIN!

#1 Post by angelgarcia »

Hi all, this is such an awesome resource! I wish I looked this up before my surgery :)

Anyway, even upon waking up from surgery, I experienced no pain or nausea. Ever since then I have not had a drop of morphine or any other prescribed pain killers since I've gotten home. Is that normal? Anyone else experience this? I'm absolutely grateful for it. The girl beside me in the hospital room had the opposite - lower jaw advancement - and she was in a lot of pain :(

Everything else was typical. Day 3 was the worst of my swelling. This liquid diet isn't the funnest thing in the world and TV food commercials suck. The liquid antibiotic tasted horrible (thank God I'm finished it!) and I would use a Mocha Boost shake as a chaser right after. Mango lassi, mango juice and those cute little yogurt drink things from the Asian supermarket are my other staples in addition to Boost.

I took 4 weeks off from work, so hopefully that's enough. The swelling has gone down a lot and I can't wait for all of it to be gone. I'm still banded shut and I can't wait until I'm allowed to keep my mouth open.

1 week after surgery I went to go see my oral surgeon and he unbanded me for a few minutes. THAT was the ONLY time I experienced nausea. I'm not sure if it was because of physical or psychological reasons. I know it felt absolutely weird to see my new bite, even though I know my teeth are closer to perfect now.

I wish everyone luck who is going through the same thing or even just braces alone. It's a lot of effort and commitment, but that smile we're all going to get in the end will be so worth it!

Thanks Meryaten :) Wow that's so great you were back at work 2nd week post op! That is really encouraging for me. My job is a desk job so it should be fine.

The girl who had surgery the same day as me also shared the same surgeon as me. I was thinking maybe it hurts more to get the lower jaw advanced because of the tension or something.

Ohhhh I love Indian food too. Actually, pretty much ALL food right now. I've been daydreaming about food nonstop since after the surgery. TV food commercials have become my THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO ADMINISTRATOR THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO ADMINISTRATOR THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO ADMINISTRATOR THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO ADMINISTRATOR THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO ADMINISTRATOR. Pizza is especially evil. I am really excited to start eating. Even just sauce-drenched rice would be good enough for me once I am able to open my mouth.

I have my 2nd post-op appointment with my OS this Tuesday and we'll see if I get to be put on guiding elastics. That would be really awesome. Good idea about the sitting down to take the elastics off for the first time. It was really weird how I got so woozy the first time I got to open my mouth - totally unexpected.

I was wondering the same thing about pain. Since my leFort I and bsso setback i haven't had any pain at all other than the swelling. I was prescribed Percocet/oxycodone but due to my personal beliefs i have not used them. I guess we are just the lucky ones. :D

Yeah G, I am sooooo grateful for no pain. Nice to know I'm not alone! I tend not to take any pain relievers either. I don't even own any Tylenol or anything on a regular basis.

Thanks Meryaten.. wow you regained FULL sensation 8 hours post-op? That's AMAZING! So far I have a tingly chin and my lower lip is still numb. I've heard the tingly chin is a good sign though :) And I've been able to smile for the past few days now so I'm really stoked to be able to open my mouth.

Ohhh Indian food..... I would absolutely love to start eating with some basmati rice drenched with malai kofta sauce or mutter paneer sauce.

I totally feel you guys on the food commercial thing. For me, its not pizza as much as burgers. It seems every restaurant has come out with a new burger this last week since my surgery just to torture me.

Also, the indian food sounds heavenly. I wonder if indian vegetable and lentil dishes qualify as mush food? If you mix them with some wet rice, I dont think you would have to chew.

Yeah when I first tried to laugh/smile after surgery, it felt exactly like that - like I was going to crack something! LOL

Thanks for all the advice Meryaten :) You are a pro at all this!

Hi angelgarcia,

i had very minimal pain after my lower jaw surgery, i wish i had known it was going to be like this before, i wouldnt have been so scared!
also i only had a very slight tingling in my bottom lip for 48 hours max, then full sensation as normal, really wasnt expecting that, as i had been told i could lose sensation permanently, i was lucky, but i think the surgeons tell you the worst that can happen, to prepare you

You folks are all so lucky! I had quite a lot of pain - more than I expected. I was on morphine for a full 10 days! I actually became physically addicted to the stuff and had withdrawl when I stopeed taking it. But thankfully that's all over now.

It has been a month since surgery and my chin is still numb - lots of tingling/prickling sensations though, so hopefully that's sign that it's going to come back.

maryjay: totally agree - it would have helped to know that i was going to completely painless after surgery. however, everyone is different and unfortunately others have to suffer more (like poor ohmyjaw.. 10 days of morphine? and morphine withdrawal? poor thing :( )

UPDATE: it's day 17 and i have the tingliest chin ever but still no sensation in my lower lip. maryjay that is amazing that you regained full sensation after 48 hours. i am now allowed to take out the elastics 2X a day to brush and exercise my jaw.

the swelling has gone down a lot and i don't feel weird in public anymore:
