Hidden underneath the underneath

Hey all, i have been in braces for about 8 months, and my lower teeth started moving now (i only had one out of place) and since it has started moving into the correct place, i noted a black dot type thing on my lower canine tooth, its like near the gum line, i think it was covered by my other tooth before it moved. i am cacking myself as nothing in this world scares me more than caries, this happened with a molar too there was a patch of dark brown/black but he said it was "calculus" i typed it into google and math came up! so just wondering do people usually have caries that were unnoticed if teeth were cramped etc? not i have braces i try to keep my oral hygiene good and i always notice if others have caries plaque (im a freak

im soo scared of teeth related problems (!)

I had a similar thing happen to me as my expander was doing its job and spaces became visible between some of my teeth. I noticed dark spots on 2 of my teeth. I asked the hygenist about them at a cleaning. She asked if I was a big coffee drinker and I said no. Then she asked if I drank a lot of soda and I had to confess that I did. She said they were stains that are common in folks that drink a lot of coffee or soda. She then used a tool that was like the polisher, but harder and sprayed water. Within seconds the stains were gone.

I also found a dark on one of my canines after my lower teeth started moving. I could actually feel it with my tongue since it felt like it was on top of the tooth surface. It turned out it was some kind of plaque buildup (never found out what it was actually called) but it came off when I went in for my cleaning at the dentist.

As KK said, the only person who would know for sure would be your dentist!

If it were a cavity, it would still have shown up on a dental x-ray even if it were hidden due to over crowding. When was your last cleaning?

I had the same problem. After I had four bicuspids extracted, I noticed a brown dot on the side of one tooth. I asked my dentist about it and he told me it was "calculus" and told me to just brush more often. At first when I Googled about it, all the websites that I've checked out have said that it can only be removed by having your teeth cleaned (which I've never ever had in my life - prior to braces, I haven't been to the dentist since I was 9).. but much to my surprise, it just went away one day! I just didn't see it on the spot where it used to be anymore. I didn't get my teeth cleaned, my dentist didn't pick it out/spray at it. I just brushed like I usually would, twice a day, and it disappeared!

I do the same! I teach English on Sundays as a part-time teacher alongside university, and there's this boy that had brown/black gunk on his teeth.. really bad plaque or calculus or something. It was such a distraction! And I couldn't exactly act like it was disturbing me. Gah. :S

That's tartar if I'm not mistaken. I had that appear too when my premolars were extracted, on the sides where the teeth used to connect. I guess it's where the floss couldn't reach, but the dentist could easily scrape it off using his picks.

Don't stress Vincent, I noticed a brownish patch on the back of a tooth after my extractions.

It was the rear side of an upper #4 tooth that, until the week before, had had an upper #5 tooth behind it in the arch. The brown patch was revealed when the #5 (bicuspids) were extracted. I noticed it when I was checking out the sockets' healing and went to see my dentist the next week.

He was :

a) very impressed that I had found the spot
b) not at all concerned
c) unbelievably quick at fixing the problem

He did what I think he called an 'etch and bond', or something along those lines. I had braced myself (no pun intended

) for a traditional drilling-etc-filling procedure. What happened was more like a cleaning. It literally took 5 mins, he cleaned the area, applied a few ungenty-things, and I was on my way.

argh thanks for the replies guys, im pretty busy with work nowadays

, dont actually have time to go and see the dentist, yh when one of my premolars were removed i had a big old brown spot on my large molar i was almost trying as it was near the gum line and though it needed to be drilled lots, but he jsut scraped it off, i get so scared when he poked it jsut incase he penatrated it
