retainers

#1 Post by flipib05 »

hi
i am going to get my braces off in february and my ortho. said that i was going to get a hawley on top, and a bonded retainer on the bottom. i want a hawley on the bottom because i have had braces previously and i did NOT like the bonded retainer because i always had sores on my tongue and when i got it taken out to get braces again, there was like a bed of tartar where the retainer had been. i did not like that at all. i flossed everyday and brushed three times a day and there was still all that tartar. i asked my ortho to see if i could have a hawley and he said he only does bonded retainers. should i explain to him why or should i just take the bonded retainer and live with it?

I would def. explain to him why you are concerned about getting a bonded retainer! You shouldn't be stuck having something for virtually forever that you never wanted in the first place. Good luck! :)
Damon 2's top and bottom, BRACED 02/22/04 and REMOVED 08/29/05. Now in bonded retainers (top and bottom) :4 wisdom teeth surgically removed on 12/22/05:

I 2nd what johnnys_angel said. Since you already had the experience with bonded retainers, you know you don't want them and will not be happy with them. You paid good money for treatment so don't let your ortho force you into something you don't want.

If he insists, give it a try.

This one could be different...some how.

If it doesn't work, he will see that it is a problem and maybe have another option.

I have a bond retainer on the top (covers only the front 4 teeth). but I also have a set of Hawley for both top & bottom that I wear 24/7. The bond retainer is because I had a big gap in the front before braces; my ortho says that the gap can reopen with just a few hours of not wearing my retainers, so the permanent retainer help to make sure that does not happen. In my case I did not mind the perm retainer; if I did, no matter what she said I would have refused to have in my mouth. It should be your call.
