What do you all take for pain? And how many milligrams?

I take 600 milligrams if I am in serious pain. I got prescription strength motrin once and it was 800 milligrams. Now that I have said that, please be aware that I RARELY do this. Only if I am in alot of pain. For the tooth pain I have never had to go more than 400 milligrams. Always take any motrin or aspirin with food or you will ruin your stomach.
Chris - if you are in that much pain you may want to talk to a doctor and/or your Ortho. It doesn't seem right that you are in that much pain all the time.

I have used painkillers only once in 8 months. I used a homeopathic product based on corydalis, boswellia, feverfew and devils claw, with a few added vitamins. It trades under the name of Pain Out in Australia and it worked well. More importantly, it has no side effects such as pushing up your blood pressure which things like Advil do.

10 mg of Valium. Oh, you didn't mean that kind of pain
Dental pain is best treated with NSAID's (Ibuprofren/Advil/Motrin, Naproxen, Aspirin, etc). Follow the instructions on the bottle. The most common non-narcotic dental pain script is Motrin 800 (1 tab tid) or Motrin 600 (1 tab qid). That is simply 12 OTC Advil/Motrin/Ibuprofren in a 24 hour period. Of course you should only take that much if it was prescribed to you since certain medical conditions may put you at risk to a higher dose. If you are that uncomfortable where you are in pain you should speak with your ortho about other pain control options.
Regards,
Rory

Thanks everyone. Its that last molar, Rory. It was getting better without the archwire on it for a month, then he put the arch wire back and its more painful than ever. It doesn't have a tooth in front to lean on so I guess its extra pressure and its tilting. Finally, the tylenol kicked in to take the edge off the pain.
I can't take the NSAIDs .... my stomach hurts even with food.

Okay folks.... now my dirty secret.
DO NOT under any condition regularly take more than the suggested amount of any pain reliever. For several years I took more than the recommended amount of Advil to control my TMJ pain. Unfortunately it wasn't until I did this for several years that a new dentist identified the problem. During this time I had MRIs, CT scans and about five other tests to identify why I had a significant pain behind my left ear. Down side.....my lower intestines now are not that healthy. I am at risk for a couple of pretty nasty diseases if I am not very careful with what I eat, drink and take.
If you need to take something for pain, do it, but don't over do it. Don't take four pills when the recommended dosage is two "because you need to." If your pain is that great, talk to your ortho and explain the problem.
One of the main reasons I started braces was to help with my TMJ issues.
Sorry if this sounds like a soapbox, but I'm proof you can really foul yourself up if you don't pay attention to the warning labels.

My comment was not to discourage the use at the prescribed dosage. My warning was to get you to follow the directions and not work on the concept that if two is good, four is better (which I was told to do for a bummed knee by a doctor).
