Miniscrew blues :o(

#1 Post by Lisa65 »

I am back 2 days early from my camping trip. I started to notice that I was getting a lot of pain in the top of my mouth which was just getting worse and worse and all round the mini screw implants were swollen. I phoned my ortho from the campsite and he said some swelling was normal and not to worry, but I woke up at 3AM today in agony. I rang again as soon as the surgery opened and said I was coming back home and could I see him asap. He said he would see me as soon as I could get there. Hubby drove me to the ferry post and I got the boat back and the train to my town and my ortho saw me straightaway. What had happened was that the "normal" amount of swelling from the implants had made my Nance appliance so tight that it was cutting into the roof of my mouth and the pressure was making my whole mouth hurt. He took the nance out and the relief was so great I burst into tears!

My ortho said it was because the OS had put the screws very close to the Nance arch so there was no room for the swelling to "go" hence the pressure. He said the actual implant sites look very good. The pain has subsided to just a dull ache but I'm not going to go back over to the campsite as we were due to come back tomorrow night anyway. So i've left hubby and the kids there to enjoy the rest of their little holiday and I can have a chill and some sleep (I haven't had much  )

It's all been a bit traumatic what with feeling faint during the actual procedure and then all this pain afterwards.

Still hopefully things will get better now.

Thanks Karen and Angel, I normally have quite a high tolerance to pain but this was getting too bad to ignore. I am using the salt water rinses and my ortho also gave me some Corsodyl gel to put round the screws (not on my teeth as it can stain) to avoid any infection setting in.

My palate is still very tender and "bruised" feeling from the nance having dug into it so hard, but I am hoping that over the next couple of days it should settle down. It already feels 10 times better than it did!

Hopefully by the time of my first adjustment in 3 weeks' time, those screws will be ready to use, to get those top molars moving back! :D

Thanks again for your support, I don't know what I'd do without all the support on here!

Sounds like it was a good thing to be close enough to "civilization" to get this corrected. May you be well and "un-swollen"!

Hi Lisa,

When will David put the nance back in? At your first adjustment?

Hi Ju

He is going to make me a new nance which will rest a bit further forward on my palate so that it doesn't impinge on the screws. I guess if everything looks OK at my first adjustment in just over 2 weeks time he will do it then. I just hope the gaps between my molars haven't closed up by then, as he didn't put any spacers in to keep the gaps open! I guess he thought I'd suffered enough for one day LOL.

I expect he did, you poor thing. He knows what he's doing so I'm sure things will be ok. No wonder they call this a journey!

Thanks Meryaten, I was able to keep hubby informed by text so he knew I was OK, and they are back now. :D

Thanks everyone :D the bruising is much better (I can touch the roof my mouth without wincing now) and there's just a little swelling round the screws - not much.

So it wasn't as bad as it could have been, and it's almost better now.

As for the spa day - we've still got the kids for another week and restful it ain't lol. Next week I'll be able to have a proper chill and hubby and I have a week booked in Sept for us to have a holiday on our own, well away from any brace adjustments or screw insertions!
