AAAH! catfish, that is a creepifying picture! We hates spiders!

Yeah, surprisingly, the expander isn't painful, it's just awkward. The most frustrating part for me has just been trying to speak. Once I get past that I'll be okay. I've learned already to start leaving the G off of words that end with -ing. Like walkin', lookin', eatin', etc. I still have to figure out how to make an EE sound. It comes out more like UGHH. hehe

And I must say, all the frustration of getting food stuck in it has put me off snacking and second helpings. I may be able to squeeze into my old jeans soon! (And I'm definitely not complaining about that!)

And also, all the annoyance of the expander has sort of made me forget that I have braces on my bottom teeth. It's like once the expander went in, I immediately became fully adapted to the lower braces. So that's good. :)

Today's my evaluation with the oral surgeon. Wish me luck! I'm hoping I'm far enough over this dumb cold that they won't make me wait another week for my surgery. I wanna get it over with already so I can stop worrying about it and start making more room on my upper jaw for this mouthful of crazy teeth!

Hi lueyfufu, I'm glad the expander isn't painful. It sure looks like it could be. I hope your cold has dimished enough to allow you to keep your surgery schedule. It will be nice to have that part over with. I wish you the best of luck, and I'm sending "good vibes" your way!

Yay!/Oh Crap! I got my surgery date. It's Tuesday...as in this Tuesday!

It's really a lot scarier after hearing about it from the surgeon. They're going to drill through my bone. (That's actually kind of a relief. I thought they'd just be giving it a few good whacks with a chisel and hope it cracked in the right places. A drill is more precise, right?) And I'm not getting away with just a couple tiny incisions. There's going to be one big incision from side to side. Yucky. Doc prescribed some valium for me to take the night before and the morning of the surgery, so at least I'll (hopefully) be calm then. And she assures me I'll be in a happy place when the sedative kicks in and probably won't remember a thing when it's done. I sure hope that's the case!

I know I'll be so glad I did this once the swelling and bruising and nosebleeds go away, but right now I'm freaking out! Aieeee!

Oh my gosh, I think I would rather not know the details of something like that right before I had it happen to me! Tell me afterwards!

At least it will be over soon. Seems like thinking about it between now and Tuesday will be the worst part! I'm glad she gave you something to help you sleep the night before. You'll need to be rested for this. Plus it sounds like she'll be obliterating the actual experience for you, so that's good.

Good luck with this, and I'll be thinking about you on Tuesday!

So I've got all my meds ready. I had to start using the nasty anti-microbial mouthwash yesterday. (First swish: "Hmm...not so bad, sort of like black licorice." Second swish: "OMG IT BURNS!!!" Third swish: "Sort of reminds me of one of those Italian apertifs. GAG.")

I take my first antibiotic pill with dinner tonight, along with my first of three valium pills before my appointment at 8:00 tomorrow morning. Eeek! I really hope those little valiums do their job.

I just keep reminding myself that by this time next week, I'll already be on the upswing.

This makes me laugh: I'm agonizing over what to wear tomorrow. :) My pre-surgery instruction sheet says to wear a loose-fitting short-sleeved shirt. And I'm thinking that I need to wear something cute but comfortable. Maybe a Sugery Eve shopping trip is in order? :D

Hi lueyfufu, you are too funny! Maybe you can go on a surgery eve shopping trip after you take your first valium - it will be interesting to see what you end up with! But seriously, I'm glad you have the valium to help you relax before your procedure. Once you get there and they give you the serious meds, you won't feel a thing.

I wonder if that mouthwash you have is the same stuff they gave me to use after my osseous surgery. That stuff is NASTY!!

Good luck tomorrow - I'll be thinking about you. You are less than a day away from completion!

GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!!! I can't believe you are actually concerned about what you'll look like. HAHAHAHA that is too cute. I bet you won't care in the morning. ;) I hope that everything goes perfectly. I'm sure it will but it's kind of like saying "break a leg" before going out on stage for good luck. Lol.

Thanks you guys! Less than two hours to go! I didn't end up going shopping last night, so no crazy valium-induced purchases. :D

I'll hopefully be sleeping most of the day today, but I'll pop on with an update when I'm feeling up to it.

Post-surgery update!

#59 Post by lueyfufu »

I made it! :)

The surgery went well. I arrived, signed a couple forms, and was then led to the room where the surgery would take place. It really just looked like a regular old exam room with a chair some normal doctor's office stuff. The nurse put a blood pressure cuff on my left arm and one of those oxygen meter things on my index finger.

After a couple minutes my surgeon came in. I asked a couple questions, and then we were ready to go. The surgeon raised the chair a little and tipped it back some. Then she very skillfully inserted the IV (into my arm, not the chair) - "...and I'll insert the IV in three, two, one..." I remember her saying something about how it would sneak up on me, and I wasn't sure what she meant, but that's the last thing I remember, so I guess she meant that the sedative would sneak up on me.

I guess I was asleep/unaware for most of the procedure. I woke up near the end to hear Doc working with the drill. (Thank goodness I didn't feel it or care.) I remember either the nurse or Doc saying I was doing well and that we were almost finished. I sort of opened my eyes and then closed them again, thinking it would be bad for the doctor if I had my eyes open. (I have no idea what that means. *lol*) Then I remember the nurse pulling out the gauze and helping me to the recovery room.

I'm not sure how long I was there, but it seemed like just a few minutes before they called my husband in. They gave me an ice pack and then we just waited until the nurse came back with home care instructions. I felt awkward not talking, and I didn't want my husband to think I was miserable, so I started a game of rock-paper-scissors with him to pass the time. :)

So the nurse finally came in with some instructions and then sent us on our way.

I spent the night in the recliner last night and didn't sleep too well, so I think I'll sleep in bed tonight instead.

I think so far my spirits are good and I've managed with taking half a Lortab (pain killer) only once yesterday afternoon. The 800mg ibuprofen seems to be enough, and I probably could even do without that, but I'm taking it just in case. :) I had a little swelling yesterday, but it wasn't too bad. I think I have a little more today, so I need to be more diligent with the ice packs. I also have some bruising on my lower cheeks, but overall I think I look pretty good. My swollen face actually makes me look a little younger.

My surgeon called yesterday evening to see how I was doing, which I thought was super-sweet. :)

Tomorrow we start "cranking" the expander. (And by "we" I mean my husband.) Two turns a day for two weeks. So two weeks from now, I'll have a big mouth! Yay! :)
