On my way to a new smile!

#1 Post by gokix »

Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm 23 and getting braces for the first time - i'm both excited and anxious!

Today I got the spacers put in, 8 in total. It pinched a bit, but I'm a few hours in and am experiencing a little discomfort, but it's not all that painful. Is there anything I need to do/avoid to make sure they don't fall out? I keep telling myself to not fear the pain! :D

Anyway, glad I found this place. :)

hi, gokix, Congratulations on deciding to get braced!

Glad the spacers aren't causing too many probs. My ortho said not to eat toffees or chewing gun while the spacers were in, but not to worry if they came out. One came out a couple of days before Brace Day, and it had done its job - the gap was big enough for the molar band.

Keep us posted on your progess. Good luck with your Brace Day!!

hi!!! welcome to AW

Im new as well...

and if your spacers didnt hurt a day or two after then you're so lucky!
I think so far spacers were the worst thing that could have happened in my process.

Had 4 on top and 4 on bottom
Spacers: 8 - 4 top, 4 bottom on 04.04.09
Braced on: 04.09.09
Sentence: 18-24 Months

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

I have to say that braces are a breeze compared to the spacers! It's mildly annoying at first, but the pain is less severe. :) I can feel the wire poking my cheeks and the band rubbing against my tongue, which is annoying, but that just means my teeth are moving.

My little milestone took place 2 weeks ago when I had my braces fitted. It's taken about 2 weeks to fully get used to having hardware in my mouth. The first week I was living on a liquid diet and that was not fun at all! My diet has changed dramatically, and there isn't a whole lot of chewing going on, but as time passes, I am finding it easier to eat foods other than oatmeal and yogurt. Thank goodness! Oh, and flossing takes forever!

My next ortho appt. is in 2 weeks for teeth extractions. Not looking forward to that!!! :(
