Just got metal braces need help with eating!

#1 Post by abigail »

ok,

So I was on invisaline for 2.5 years and that was completly fruitless... :(

so I have switched to metal braces this week. And I have yet another 1.5 years to go.. :(

This is taking waaay too long I should of started with metal braces! Oh well hindsite is 20/20.

Neways.. with these new metal braces everything is ok.. as for the pain and the amount of stuff in my mouth I am used too from invisaline..

But what is torturing me is eating!!!

I can't stand it! Half of every bite I take gets tangled up in my braces!! then I feel like I have a coat hanger of food hangin off my teeth! Then It takes me 20 mins after every meal to take a little brush and brush out all the stuck and hanging food and swish it out with liguid! this is driving me nuts!

Are there any suggestions??? Any quick and easy way to get my teeth cleaned easier?? I HATE HATE HATE having food stuck in my teeth!

help!

Why would they recommend invisalign if it was not going to work? That is just ridculous. If it were me, I'd be REALLY pissed.

I'd sue them if I were you. 2 1/2 years of expensive treatment for nothing?? And then there's all the time you had to put in for visits, etc...

HI!

In response to your eating question...

Swish (violently) with water (or whatever beverage you choose to drink while eating) about every 3 or 4 bites. YOu will get used to this and find a discrete way to do it (I put a napkin to my mouth and do it REAL FAST).

Then you will get really good at s ucking food out from under your wires with your tongue after a few weeks.

Let your tongue do most of the work on the way to the bathroom to RINSE RINSE RINSE before brushing.

Also use brush picks or inter-proxyl brushes before you brush.

You WILL get used to it!! I know that's hard to believe right now, but it will happen. I sometimes don't even have to brush after a meal. I even ate quite a lot of corn on the cob this summer

If you are eating at home, use interplak or some type of waterpik. Use it before brushing and after. When you think your teeth are clean, use it one more time. You won't believe what you will find still lodged in your teeth  They make travel size interplaks too, I believe.

If I have to bite into something I bite at the side of my mouth. Most of my food gets stuck on the first bite, so this way it's at the side of my mouth and not right out infront for the world to gag at.

Thanks for the tips guys!!

I think I will have to get used to this... I might just end up eating less... But I don't really need to loose waight! after a few days I have noticed I am a little more used to the feeling. .But I do still need to take about 10-20 mins after each meal to clean out my food hangers... haha

As for the Invisalign thing... yeah it was a wste of tiem and money... I ended up spending 2000$ more and 1.5 years longer then if I had just gone with metal... :(

but ... its a new thing... so I suppose its going to be experimental..

and I REALLY didnt want to have to have metal braces... But I gotta bite the bullet and deal with it.

I don't think my doctor was too keen on invisaline on my case at first... and he originally told me he thought with my case I would have to do half and half.. likea year in invisaline and a year in braces...

But I guess the invisaline people told him he could.. 100%..

and so we decided to give it a go...

but... in the end it didnt work out.. but I guess I DID save myself a year from being in metal braces... which is a bonus I guess even though total treatment is longer...

Oh well..

It gets better!

It really does! I had a horrible time with eating my first month, but now after a few months it's so much better! Pureed soups (or sometimes call bisque) were a gem initially. They're filling, tasty and very healthy. There are some great recipes out there too, a quick google search should get you a bunch. I eat anything now and just cut it up smaller and chew more in the back. I always swish with water too. You just get used to a quick trip to the washroom with a little toothpick handy : ) They have plastic toothpicks that have some roughed edges that are very helpful.

Glad you're on a better track with your new braces! Your journey will go quickly I am sure, and your results will no doubt be fabulous!

I also suggest, when eating that you would normally bite in to, like a sandwich, that you try to cut or tear it into bite size pieces. That helps me keep it from getting stuck in the front teeth at least. And napkins will be your best friend to cover your mouth while trying to work something out!

It definitely gets easier to deal with... we've all been there! Good luck!
