Coil spring question

#1 Post by Featheryy1221 »

Hey guys! So at my appointment yesterday, the assistant told me that at my next appointment I'd be getting a coil spring on my lowers to move one of my incisor teeth into alignment. I was just curious how people that had one of these on got along with them. Do they cause more pain and a lot more irritation? How long did you have one on? Did you see results fairly quickly?
Thanks in advance! Hope your days are going great! :D

There are coils that push and there are coils that pull. I've had push coils on both arches to create gaps to make room for teeth.

I found them a little painful but I either got over it or got used to it. I'm not really sure which. I thought they were kind of ugly but my husband and close friends said they weren't that noticable.

I had mine on for 10 weeks on top and 12 on the bottom. (I have Damon braces so the time between adjustments is quite long.)

On the bright side, you'll see results very quickly. I noticed a difference while flossing after about a week and could see movement after about two weeks.

Mine pushed like crazy for a few days, then I didn't notice them much. After the springs opened up they were kind of "done" and then just held things in place. I had 2 sets for about 4 months total, so set #2 was like getting set #1 all over again. They do work quickly!

Good to hear that you both saw results quickly. :) ljms, I'll probably think they look ugly as well. Haha. I know when I've seen them in people's photos on here I always think, "those things look like they hurt." I don't show my bottom teeth ever so at least no one will see it. I'm guessing you probably just got used to them because that's how everything is when it comes to orthodontics. :) 10 weeks with them in isn't too bad. I figured they'd take longer than that.
orangeracer, that's too bad that you had to have 2 of them. But I'm sure you were better prepared for the second one. :) They do seem like they'd take a bit to get used to. I feel like the coil will probably cut the inside of my lip up so I'm not too excited about that.
Thank you both for your responses! :)

Oh man, I remember having these on when I was 9. Two years of palatal expanders and braces -- and the springs were the ONLY part of my treatment that drove me to despair. They seriously tore up the insides of my cheeks like nothing else, and it was hard to keep such a long length of wire covered with wax.
