David,

42 year-old man here, had LeFort I and BSSO seven weeks ago--lived to tell about it!

YOU CAN DO IT! Totally understand your feeling though. I think perfectly normal.

Be ready with ice for three days, and make sure all your meds are lined up in advance. Are you spending the night in the hospital?

If you are banded shut, be sure to have plenty of liquid nourishment on hand.

We're here for you. Keep us all posted, we'll help out however we can.

Thanks phil,

I've been sticking my lower chin out for so long that I created some major TMJ issues. I keep telling myself that there will be no need for this anymore with my new profile. Thanks for the kind words of encouragement:)

I will be spending the night in the hospital and my home looks like a pharmacy with all the stuff that I bought!

Hi David, I hardly ever come into this forum as I'm not one of the surgery crowd here, but having had ops in the past I know that night-before petrified feeling well!

All the best for tomorrow, and I'm sure the post-op survivors will be here to support you afterwards.

Take care
Lisa

I went through it last week - it wasn't as bad as I was expecting, at all. Best of luck with it all.
My tip would be to get help if you're uncomfortable in hospital. I didn't want to be a nuisance so suffered a bit more than I should have done.. but the nurses should be there to help you and make you comfortable, so make sure they do. If you need pillows plumped, suction tube applied, help drinking, humidified oxygen.. gesticulate for it!

6 days post-op, I am pretty much back to normal, except for feeling in some ways like John Merrick (swollen face, similar speech thanks to the %$^£&!! bite wafer, wishing I could lie down like normal people..)

Best wishes, David! The anxiety will be over with shortly! And then you can relax and start the task of recuperating :-Z .

The best advice I can give is try not to think about the surgery! Let the specialists do their jobs. And try to keep your mind busy with other things. It worked for me. I am 6 weeks post-op and don't regret it.

I know I'll be feeling just like you when the time comes. Good luck and I look forward to hearing how you've got on. This is such a short part of your life with lots of time ahead to enjoy the improvements.

A very sincere THANK YOU to everyone for the encouragment. I keep telling myself that this is an elective procedure and that i am fortunate to be in position of having it.

I just ate a liquid dinner (practice for the next 3 1/2 weeks) :) That magic bullet is wonderful!

Gonna go fill up some socks with rice (thanks Brandy) and pack my overnight bag.

I'll touch base asap.

:)

That pretty much sums up my story. Are your doctors confident your TMJ issues will be resolved soon after the surgery? Mine say it's my best chance of healing but I don't really get the impression they are confident.

This is a bit off topic but, did you happen to notice dark bruising/shiners appeared under your eyes around the time your TMJ issues set in?

Thanks and I hope everything went well!

Hi Skaff,

My surgeon was adament about having some smaller procedures done to fix the TMJ before I had the big jaw surgery. The first attempt was when they stick a needle in the TMJ and flush it out trying to move the condials back into place. I have always had lot of clicking and closed locking since I can remember. This procedure did not work, so he decided to perform arthroscopic surgery where a camera goes into the tmj and he cleans it out and tries to move the condials into place. It worked!!! As of April I have not had any clicking or locking. My bit was all out of wack and
I could only open mouth mouth max 2 knuckles worth, but no more TMJ!!! I just had the big jaw surgery to fix the overbite and he was concerned that this surgery could possibly move my condials back to the same bad position, so I had an xray done yesterday directly from the hospital to the surgeons office to look for this. According to him, if the condials moved back, then I would have to have another arthroscopic surgery within 1 weeks. Luckily, the condials did not move according to the xray and I should be okay after the splint is removed n 3.5 weeks.
And YES - I have had shiners under my eyes since i can remember - they are really bad and I have tried everything to get rid of them with no success - hopefully this procedure will help.
