I'm home!!

#1 Post by nvcarissa »

Hi everybody!!

Thanks for all your good wishes. I think they worked! I got through the surgery fine. One glitch, he got my jaw all set and screwed and then realized that it had dropped back about 2mm, so they had to go back in, unscrew, re-set and rescrew, so he wired me up a bit extra, but says that the screws held well.

Sweetie freaked out a bit at the sight of me in recovery...tubes in each nose,as well as the drainage tubes under my chin...I probaly looked like crap. He told me he went outside and cried. My best friend was there too...we told them she was my sister and she's the one that let them know I was nauseous in recovery.

Believe it or not, I am not that swollen, just chubby cheeks (will post pics tomorrow). That may have to do with the drainage tubes that he had go up on each side of my jaw. But even OS seems surprised on how little swelling I am having. Also, I am not in too much pain!! And only one numb spot...lower left (mine) lip and chin. So the right side has feeling and allows me to be able to drink from a cup!!! Woo-hoo!! I use my zip-n-sqeeze for water so I can have it beside me all the time. I also get more water in me using that than sipping from a cup.

I have been in the jaw bra with ice for the past two days, will wear it today and tomorrow, then Sunday NOTHING. Then Monday and Tuesday I am to start heat therapy. Wires will get snipped on Tuesday with two elastics on each side. Since he had to do "double" duty on my jaw, he said I will really have to go slow on the eating stuff.

The hospital staff was wonderful, but full liquids to them means something entirely different to someone who has to use a syringe or zip-n-squeeze. This morning I got cream of wheat (could not eat - just left a gritty goopy mess in the side of my cheek), orange juice with pulp...stuck in all the wires...what fun, decaf coffee (I drank it...didn't like it) and milk, which I promptly traded for a chocolate milk.

I can brush my teeth (on the outside)!!

I hadn't had any caffeine in three days, so sweetie bought me a mocha frappacino at Starbucks on the way home and I am buzzing a bit.

Anyway, just wanted to check in. I am so glad to be on the other side! Thanks again for all the good thoughts!!

NVCarissa,
What wonderful news, I have been checking daily to see if you made it through relatively unscathed. Sounds like you are doing incredibly well which is terriffic news! Little swelling and hardly any pain is great! and I think you are right about he drainage tubes helping. My doctor uses those too and I have heard very good things about them. The fact that you have hardly any numbness is wonderful! Despite the whole surgery ordeal, it sounds like you are doing better than most so that has got to be a big relief huh???

Keep the updates coming, as I know many of us are thinking of you and sending well wishes your way! Congratulations on making it to the other side!

I am about to go take a shower and will take my "day four" pics at that time. Then I will work on getting some stuff posted so you can get an idea of my progress.

I feel a bit sorer today. I have also been "exercising" my tongue and lips. I twist my tongue all around inside my mouth...feels good, and then I smile broadly and purse my lips like I am trying to kiss someone to exercise my lips.

Be back a bit later...

Thanks again for all your good wishes and thoughts.
