Need some advice

#1 Post by Braceblues »

Hello, I am new here. I had metal braces put on almost three months now. I have some crooked teeth,a few are turned sideways,an underbite, and only one tooth on one side hits to chew on. My jaw also clicks on that one side. My dentist wanted to see me get a better bite so she suggested going to an orthodontist and getting the braces. I did ok the first six weeks then after getting my wires changed I started to get bad tmj symptoms. Neck, shoulder, head pains. My bite is really bad due to moving the teeth. She put some blue build ups on a few teeth and it helped some but now five weeks later it is back bad again. I am so discouraged and want to give up but my teeth are really messed up right now. Anyone have or went through this? Any advice what I should do? I want so bad to have straight teeth and able to bite and chew food again but don’t know how to get through this.

Things get worse before they get better at least that's what I tell myself. I got braces to see if it helps with my TMJ issues and at first it seemed like it was horrible than it started getting better. Time will tell.

Thanks SDFD,

Well things can’t get any worse than they are so I am hoping they get better over time as my teeth get straight and my bite is fixed. It’s gonna be a long road ahead I am sure. I just need a way to cope with the tmj pain till then. I hope your braces takes care of your tmj problems for you. Please let me know how it goes for you.

Hi There - have you shared with your ortho the serious TMJ symptoms you've been having? Also; have you tried any NSAID's for the discomfort (Motrin, Naproxyn, Celebrex)??

I am having the same problem. I am about 5 months into my braces, and my bite is so much worse than before. My bottom right wisdom tooth actually got raised up (even though it doesn't have a bracket on it), and now when I try to bite on the right side, the only teeth that hit is my upper second molar and my bottom wisdom tooth.

as a result, my tmj problem is so much worse. I brought it up once during my "emergency" appt, but the ortho didn't really say anything. I am going in for my normal appt tomorrow with xray and supposedly my ortho is going to start working on my bite...

Kplatt,

Thanks! I had this same problem five weeks ago. I went and told her about it. She looked and said because of teeth moving I had no where to bite. They made me molar build ups on both sides and everything was good till this past week again. I am thinking the molar build ups need redone because of teeth moving again. I have my appointment next week. Hoping this will fix that problem again.

My ortho put a bracket on my right wisdom tooth to see if it would go down a bit... My TMJ was a bit better starting a couple days ago. I used heating pads on my jaw muscle, and opened my mouth before i fall asleep..

not sure if it's just my jaw got used to my twisted and raised wisdom

Hi Wendydoing- was there ever any discussion that the wisdom teeth needed to be extracted due to crowding? I have super small mouth and had wisdom and 4 other permanent removed. Wisdom and two permanent with braces as a teen. The other two before this go around with braces.

Hi kplatt2010, weirdly no..

And no dentist have ever mentioned to me.. I had an invisalign express treatment couple years before with a dentist, he didn't mention wisdom teeth extraction, but the invisalign treatment was unsuccessful, my teeth barely moved.

and this round, i consulted two orthos. neither of them mentioned wisdom teeth extraction

Read my other thread today and let me know what you think

Saw my ortho today. She fixed my blue molar build ups. She said they wear down. Now my bite is better and no more tmj pain.

I am three months in braces. The ortho also put a new heavier wire (this is my third) on the top teeth plus a spring. She is trying to make some space to pull down a canine into place. That really hurt. I thought she was trying to pull out my tooth. It’s not too bad right now. I go back in five weeks.
