Upper jaw & Chin surgery going back to soccer

#1 Post by joepottsy »

Hi all,

I had upper jaw surgery and chin surgery on the 24th of July. My university teams training camp is due to start again this coming Tuesday which is only 4 weeks after surgery with preseason games starting by the 30th August. I spoke to my surgeon and he seemed to think I'd be okay to play but obviously its a heavy contact sport with the ball and taking knocks to the head. Especially as I play in defense for my team. The actual regular season would start nearly 6 weeks after my surgery. I am yet to do any form of hard cardio after my surgery and I am wondering if it is unrealistic for me to think it is safe for me to play and also that I'd be in condition to play at that high a level after such a surgery. Any thoughts or experience on this?

Thanks.

I wouldn't risk it. In my case I couldn't chew any hard foods for 10 weeks so I'm struggling to see how playing soccer would be safe.

I second Pecuod. You get hit in the face with a ball once and it could mean game over and back to the OR.

I play women’s ice hockey on a non-checking league and my surgeon absolutely will not release me to play until 12 weeks. Keep in mind we have full pads and a helmet with a cage. My ortho thought that was a bit excessive but told me to trust the surgeon.

Thank you all for your replies. I have since decided that I won't play this fall as I would miss half the season anyways waiting to be healthy. I'd rather not have to go through a second recovery thats for sure.

Thank you again.
