Tooth Shaving

#1 Post by mcfly24 »

Hi Everyone,

New to the boards here as I'm on tray 2 of my 18 tray treatment plan. I'm doing this through my dentist and as she showed me the digital plans there was a section about 'teeth shaving' where 0.3mm was to be shaved from the sides of a few of my bottom teeth where crowding is. My question is, is this common? and how painful is this procedure?

Interproximal reduction (IPR). No pain. Maybe a little sensitivity but I had it done to remove black triangles. I had no pain or sensitivity but everyone is different. The gaps closed up in a few weeks.

Girlfriend just had all her bottom teeth done a bit at her last appointment to make space. Just a bit of soreness afterwards (could've been new tray pain as well). Little Ibuprofen and problem solved. Not a big deal at all really.

I had my bottom teeth shaved to widen the gaps between them. I'm usually super-sensitive to tooth/gum pain but apart from the "this feels super-weird" sensation, it was no problem. No soreness after, either. Like FlyByNight, my gaps closed up in a few weeks.

If done properly, there should be no sensitivity or increase the predisposition to cavities. You don't need any needles for this procedure either. We've put together a video outlining IPR (inter proximal reduction) / shaving / slenderizing / filing. Hope this helps!

Are there any scientific articles about the predisposition to cavities due to tooth shaving?

The orthodontist in charge of my treatment performed IPR on quite a few teeth both top and bottom (lots of crowding) and the procedure wasn’t a big deal. However, breathing the enamel dust is something to avoid, mostly because of the unpleasant odor. I suspect most orthos will be conservative with IPR simply because enamel is very important and once it’s gone...
