Wisdom teeth removal , anybody?

#1 Post by roxie2519 »

My dentist just told me that she could remove my 4 windsom teeth at the end of my treatment . I'm not scared but one question runs through my mind." Is this necessary"? At first she said that it is not necessary but now she changed her mind. Has anybody have to go through this? Does it feel different having your teeth pulled out as an adult?

I had mine taken out at the start of my treatment, before I had my braces put on. But I needed them out due to crowding.
I was told that you don't use them to chew, and they're just extra teeth to clean.
I had mine taken out under GA in hospital. You can get them taken out under LA in the chair, but I insisted for the GA (I'm a wuss).
I don't know if it feels different having them taken out as an adult..? But I do know that I had only minimal pain after 24 hours or so, and there was no swelling.

Did your dentist mention why it is necessary to get them out?

I had mine removed when I was 20. They used local anesthetic and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) at the surgeon's office (if you opt for general anesthetic, you have to go to a hospital) and I didn't even need the prescription painkillers afterwards. The absolute worst part was being unable to eat solid foods for about a week. I would have gone back and had them removed again every day for that week if it meant I could eat right away.
Had Damons (ceramic upper, metal lower) from June 27, 2013 - January 20, 2015
15-18 month sentence, official time in braces was 18 months, 3 weeks, 3 days

My wisdom teeth removal was no big deal as they were not impacted. I had my top teeth pulled when I was 18 and the bottom pulled at 27, right before getting the braces. But times I didn't need the pain killers and only had a local, no laughing gas. I remember the top teeth seriously took about 10 minutes and the bottoms took about an hour but my roots were curled in combination with having a dentist fresh out of dental school.
I don't think a lot of people get their wisdom teeth pulled until they're adults because they don't get them until they're adults! :-*
That's why there was such a large gap in the years that I got mine pulled. My tops came in at 18 but the bottoms didn't grow in until around 25. I'd just get them pulled now, why wait until you're done?

Thanks guys... Although your stories don't sound too terrifying I'm stil scared. :( I'm not afraid of needles but when it comes to pulling out teeth it is a whole another sorry. Hopefully they will put me under general anesthesia

I had mine out at 19 and it was painful for me but only because I was allergic to the narcotics they prescribed me. That being said, I had absolutely no room for them and they were all 4 impacted. I was under twilight anesthesia (not general) and don't remember a thing. If you leave your wisdom teeth behind, they can wreak havoc on your orthodontic results! You'll be just fine :)

I had my wisdom teeth removed at 25. 3 came in fine, the 4th didn't. I only had them out because I was having upper jaw surgery anyway.

I had my upper 2 pulled when I was 32, the lower ones at 42 - my first wisdom tooth came in at 27! One of the lower ones was impacted and was a surgical extraction. I had all 4 pulled with local anaesthetic only. The 3 regular extractions took about 10-15 minutes each, but the surgical extractions took about 30 minutes. I had stitches in all for 4 sockets for 1 week afterwards but apart from the one that was surgically extracted, I had no real pain or discomfort that an OTC painkiller couldn't deal with. My dentist gave me 3 days worth of antibiotics too.

I had two of my wisdom teeth removed (not impacted) a few years ago and recently before I got my braces, I was recommended to remove my bottom impacted wisdom teeth, so I did (in addition to two premolars). In my opinion, I'd rather endure the pain of teeth extraction than the first week of having my braces on! The pain from the wisdom teeth goes away completely and heals within 2 weeks. Good luck!

I don't know about your question. but don't be terrified. are your wisdom teeth impacted? mine were not. the worst thing for me was the blood everywhere in my mouth for the first hours after the removal. i discovered that if i kept the gauze? a little longer, it won't be much of a problem. i was just too terrified of getting a dry socket. the surgeon was highly skilled it didn't take him long and there was very very mild swelling afterwards. if you do get them extracted, make sure to go to a specialist.

Yup! I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed back in January under local anesthesia. Such a relief!

Thanks guys. The only thing that she had told me is that they are half way out , and she made it seem easy. I did not get a lot of details about it . I'm thinking she will put me under local since she has a small office . I just don't want to be awake to see it

You're going to be fine. If you are going to be awake, I'd suggest listening to some music while it's happening. I had planned to do that when I first got my top wisdom teeth removed, but then I forgot to press play, so I heard all the sounds lol. It wasn't that bad cuz you can't feel anything but pressure..and you don't actually see anything. I actually felt the tooth land on my tongue when he got it out too..!

When I removed my bottom impacted wisdom teeth 1.5 months ago prior to getting braces, I was given laughing gas first, then an injection to put me to sleep. Next thing I knew, they were stuffing my mouth with gauze. Both experiences were different, but the healing processes were very similar.

I only had 3 wisdom teeth and had them all pulled when I was about 23. They were erupted and it only took the Navy dentist a couple moments. They didn't break apart and she didn't have to dig, so that helped.

I had to walk back to the ship numb, swollen, and drooling blood; but other than that it was fine.
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign) On for about 18 months
Night time elastics with invisalign retainers; still...
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15...
Orthodontics never really ends...
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!
