Disadvantages to cosmetic composite bonding?

#1 Post by hotsteve »

Hi all

I am currently nearing the end of my Invisalign treatment. My Dentist (as well as my ortho) briefly suggested doing some composite bonding on my front teeth after the treatment, purely for aesthetics.

I came across the following article (which btw I highly recommend if you are also having costmetic restoration!):
http://www.deardoctor.com/articles/arti ... /index.php

But I was hoping any of the members who have had this procedure done, could share their experiences?

The photos I have seen (eg on that website!) show really great results, but because I am quite happy with how my teeth now look, I am trying to establish if there are any downsides to doing this. For example:
  • 1. Does this in any way harm the "real" tooth?
    2. Does this reduce the strength of the tooth, either in the short or long term?
    3. Can there be complications if the composite needs replacing or touching up in the future?
    4. Do the disadvantages (if any) outweight the minor aesthetic benefit?
The main disadvantage I have found online is the long-term cost (i.e. of having the composite replaced every few years)... if this is the only negative then that is fine, but if theres a chance of weakening the tooth in the long term then it is maybe not worth it.

Thanks for your help & advice!:)

Hello! Excellent news that you're happy with the results.

I will definitely be getting composites after I'm done as I have only have one canine remainingso will need to reshape for symmetry.

My boyfriend had some composites not ortho related but just for leveling the bottom and hey look great. The only down sides is that they won't last forever, but they are good because they are an addition to your teeth rather than a veneer where they file away the enamel and stick something else on.

I would definitely suggest booking for a consultation with a specialist to get proper answers to your questions

Best of luck

I had composite 'veneers' on my teeth prior to braces, only problem was that when they came off my teeth were super sensitive!

Thanks both for the responses! :) Meeting my ortho this week so will be having a chat with him about it then.

Can't believe I'm going into my last month of Invisalign treatment already!
