Chipping/Breaking Teeth

#1 Post by NICURN85 »

Hi Everyone,
So I have been in braces now for 4 months. Well, over the past week or so I guess my teeth have moved some and my top front touch my bottom front teeth and every time I chew/eat they are constantly hitting each other and I feel as though I am going to CHIP or BREAK part of my teeth. I am due back to the ortho on Jan 3. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if so how was this resolved? Thanks!!! If you click on my link and go to page 13 of my story you can see what I mean if this helps any.

They shouldn't meet tip to tip, I'm in braces mainly because mine met badly and caused the bottom incisors to wear. And, I discovered when the braces were fitted and the teeth got really sensitive to touch, cross bit when I talked.

Phone your ortho and see if they will take a look. I had a molar touching one of the brackets and mine sorted it out next day.

Duncan, do you mean they shouldn't meet tip to tip when you chew on your back teeth? They should meet when you want to take a bite out of a sandwich or pizza or something. I know this because mine have NEVER met this way in the front. Mine just barely meet tip to tip now, but I have to bite hard to squeeze past the premolars on the right that hit first.

So NIC, I have a similar problem, except it's not my fronts that hit hard, it's my right side premolar/canine area. When I chew I will hit these teeth sometimes and it does feel like I'm going to do damage. I say be careful and ask your ortho about it at the next appt. Are your uppers to be moved forward in front of the lowers more?

I'm not too fussed about comfort, I will go for the one that lasts the longest and retains the teeth the best!

No idea what that is yet... I'm sure I'll find out in 4-5 months.

I'll probably buy a spare one too :-)

Thanks everyone for your responses.

@Kip-Well I started out with a slight overbite and the plan is to pull the upper arch backwards and the lower forward. (I think I got that right) You can visualize it better maybe if you see my pics on my page. Page 1 has what I started out with and page 13 is how they are now.

Here is a mini update everyone. By the way good morning to all. So, as you all may know for the past week or so I have been noticing my teeth are meeting edge to edge in the front. Well, instead of waiting until my appointment on Jan 3, I decided to call the ortho office this morning when I got off work to see if the could see me and they were like come on in. So I leave work and go, the ortho takes a look and told me what what going on was normal. I was so relieved because it has been on my mind for the past week that I was going to chip a tooth. He assured me that wouldn't happen. So, I get up out the chair to leave and he tells me that he will have my late Christmas gift for me on my next appointment and asked if I would like to know what it was and I was like a little kid and said YES!!!! Sooooooooooo guess what I get as a gift from the ortho my next appointment..........................HEADGEAR!! I think my eyes almost popped out the sockets when he said that. Lol. I was thinking to myself oh my. He was like the good thing is you only have to wear it when you are asleep. So, I guess I know what one Christmas gift is.

Mine actually did chip a bit before I started, which is part of why I'm seeking orthodontic treatment....

Yikes, headgear!

After my bite started to shift there was a brief period where my front top and lower teeth were hitting. It mainly happened just as I was falling asleep, no idea why! It's like my jaw would start shifting and then I'd wake up to this awful jarring of my teeth banging together. It actually did chip my front teeth, but then again I have very thin front teeth from prior wear, so it didn't take much. My ortho smoothed the chipped teeth, which made them shorter and I wasn't very happy about it, but then he lengthened them with the wire so it's not as bad now.
Class II moderately deep overbite, mild crowding.
Braced on January 19, 2011. Debraced on December 16, 2013.
2 years, 11 months in braces.

I have an appointment with my general dentist in the beginning of January.... Since I started this braces journey I have clenched my teeth so hard together in my sleep that my last bottom tooth just had to give in and now has a crack going down to the gum.

The clenching is better now that it was when I got braces but I still have nights when it’s very bad. This tooth was also weakened by a big filling and probably other things were a factor too for this crack.

It can either be very bad (that it goes down to the root, which I think, in the worst case, will result in extraction but I don't think it's that bad) or just an easy fix. I’m hoping for the last one (of course  ).
