getting Braces at 42

#1 Post by smile4jen »

Hi all,
I've been visiting this forum on and off for a few years. Now I'm taking the plunge.
If all goes well I'll be braced the first part of Oct.

BEST OF LUCK!

Can't wait to hear your story. Prepare for a bit of a rough time and a lot of great times, when you'll see how beautiful your teeth look even during treatment. take pics and prepare for the end result ;)

I went into the Ortho with the naive thought of 6 to 9 months.
The estimate is 24 months...I'm ready to do this. I figure the longer I wait, the longer it will take

Hi,
You will actually find quite a number of "older" adults on this forum. I am 54 and am going to be getting my braces on at the end of October. Two years of treatment and I will have my beautiful smile restored to me after living with a very large (3.5 mm) diasema) for quite a while. I can't wait to get started!
Best of luck to you and keep u s posted on your progress.

Yesterday my teeth hurt (crowded). I told my hubby, if I wasn't already scheduled for braces next week, I'd be getting an appointment.
The only thing that can slow me down now is if my treatment plan comes and says I need teeth removed. I'll call the first of next week if I don't get anything in the mail.
I have lower wisdoms vertical impaction and a couple supernumerary bicuspides in the jaw.
If that needs taken care of first, I'll have to use my brace money. And put off getting braced. :(

ps. I told my ortho at the first consult about the impactions and Extra teeth in the jaw. He didn't say they would need addressed. But I'm sure the X-rays could change things.

Well best of luck to you. As I've sure you've discovered by now from reading all the posts put up by other people, not a single person has ever regretted getting their braces. That's pretty much what finally convinced me to go ahead and take the plunge. I'm getting mine put on at the end of October. I won't need any extractions, though. I can certainly understand why you might be hesitant about that. So, if you are really concerned about, why don't you consider going to a second (or even a third!) orthodontist for a second or third opinion. I actually saw two different orthodontists and when they both told me essentially the same thing, it became just a matter of choosing the one I thought would do the best job. Just a thought.

Dee17, I'm sorry I think you miss understood my post.

I'm happy with the Ortho I picked. I'm not nervous about what orthodontics involves.
I'm not hesitant about doing extractions if needed. Just don't have the funds to do everything at once

Oh, okay. You're right, I misunderstood what you said. Sorry about that. Thanks for clearing it up and setting me straight.

I have a very large space between my two front teeth that needs closure. Also my bottom teeth are tipped outwards and he's bringing them back in.

I also am 42 and getting braces. I was surprised that the orthodontist said my overbite was not that bad and my teeth were not too bad for my age. Am I missing something? Is this something they all say before they give you the gigantic price? LOL! Also, how much pain should I expect?

Probably not much pain, I wouldn't think. I had an enormous space between my two front teeth and wore braces for 26 months. I had virtually no pain whatsoever. Best of luck on your journey!
