I have been trying to find out who are the most talented surgeons that do orthognathic surgeries. My list includes Posnick, Arnett, Gunson, Super and Schendel but based on the discussion here and his publications I'm leaning towards Dr. Gunson. I have understood that he is the most aesthetics oriented surgeon whose special expertise is orthognathic surgery. However, I would like to know if there are equally reputable surgeons overseas, for instance, in Europe? Another question is how many consultations/appointments are usually needed before pre-orthodontic treatment has been started? I hope those who have had their surgery done especially in Santa Barbara (Arnett/Gunson) could give me an answer.
Edit: I forget to ask if it's possible to contact Arnett/Gunson practice via email? I only discovered its telephone number.

Re: Talented surgeons and other questions
mikaell,
I cannot speak for other surgeons, but I can say my experience with Dr. Gunson was a positive one. They do one major consultation before treatment starts. From there I did not have to see them again till just before surgery. I am on the other side of the country so seeing him more often was not really an option. He was in constant contact with my orthodontist. They do have email addresses, but it would really be best to call and ask to speak to someone.
Good luck in your search!
Mary

Re: Talented surgeons and other questions
because of the language barrier european surgeons usually treat patients of their own country and are not known beyond that. I could tell you about a surgeon in my country with a focus on aesthetics, but then again, how would I know whether there isnt another one in norway who is better.
there are however some surgeons in switzerland who are more widely known and are aesthetics oriented.
I guess in part because they speak a few languages there and treat people from many countries, and maybe because modern orthognathic surgery was developed at the university of zurich, so there are many surgeons in that area.

I have a similar situation like yours but I live even a bit further - in Europe - and that's why I asked about appointments in the first place. I assume that you had one consultation before the major one so altogether three consultations before the surgery, am I correct?

And, in addition, because of the language (and population especially in USA) English and American surgeons usually stand out when using Google search. However, I'm not looking for the best surgeon because nobody could give me an objective answer but talented, reputable, aesthetic oriented etc. surgeons so I don't mind if there might be better surgeon somewhere.

I would like to hear their names if you don't mind telling them. You could PM me if you like.

I've e-mailed Gunson before and he never got back to me. I saw him for a consult not too long ago and I just had some follow up questions. Have you ever e-mailed Gunson or Arnett and gotten a reply?

Re: Talented surgeons and other questions
mikaell - I had 1 consult about 2.5 years before surgery, then 1 appointment one or two days before surgery. So only two consults. But, like I said, my doctors were in constant contact.
ReoSity- I have emailed with Dr. Gunson, however, I have been in most email contact with one of his assistants. I would call the office and either ask questions via phone, or ask for an email of someone you can ask questions to.
