Have any of you had trouble or noticed it's hard to find your bite? When I bite down the teeth on the right don't meet. It takes me a little while to adjust my jaw to bite down and all teeth meet. Scared if I bite down hard I'll damage a bracket! I know it'll get better once gaps close and therefore malaclussion will no longer be a problem. A little reasurance would be great not due to see ortho for 2nd adjustment until end of may. Teeth are lovely and straight already just need to fix overjet.
Yes! At my first adjustment my ortho asked me to bite down, and i said "i'm not sure i know how" I know i'm eating funny too, chewing mainly on the left, cause it feels weird on the right. My bite used to be perfect...it literally changed over night, about a week into braces. But i'm sure its something that'll be fixed as my gaps start to close.

Yup. My bite is insanely off. My ortho is concentrating on adjusting my bite right now (in addition to starting the process of moving a couple of very crooked teeth so I can actually get a bracket on one of them). It pretty much changes daily now, but hasn't actually been what I'd call remotely normal in weeks. But then again what used to be my normal was not a healthy bite, so this is good! It's weird, I've found I pretty much keep my jaw slightly open whenever I'm conscious of it. Had my first adjustment yesterday and she said it would be that way for a while. No pain, no gain!
It was off, still is to a certain extent. In the beginning of my treatment, there was a lot of movement, so I never could bite down fully. Just recently, my ortho had me wear elastics for 2 months. I am finally off them. Big relief there. When I bite down now, the left side pushes down just a tad harder than the right side.
I totally sympathize.
I couldn't chew properly for most of my treatment but I never broke a bracket or damaged a tooth. For me, I got used to my bite being off. It slowly got better and better though the course of treatment. You may be at the worst stage right now. Hang in there. It gets better.
thanks so much for all your replies! Glad I'm not the only one. I couldn't really bite down/close my jaw when I first got braces, mainly because mouth seemed massive lol with all the metal. Obviously my mouth doesn't feel as 'full' now but my jaw kinda just hangs (with mouth closed)lol maybe it did before and I'm just more conscious of it. Really looking forward to closing gaps and finding a good bite I tend to eat on my right side, the side that doesn't close fully, think I naturally go to that side though.
Today I ate a boiled sweet with a sticky centre forgetting I had a nace palatal button on roof of my mouth. Luckily of course it melted but had visions of going to next appt with boiled sweet stuck to roof of mouth for a few seconds lol!!
For 27 years of my life I never know my bite is off until I decided to wear braces and was told I have cross bite. And it just hit on me why have I only been using my left side to chew on food because my bite is totally off on my right side.
9 months in braces, I finally know how it feels to have my bite corrected! For the first time in my life I can finally chew on both side of my teeth!
