Molar Bands

#1 Post by JamesBraces »

Does everyone wearing braces have molar bands?
Or is it only in certain cases?

I don't have them and neither did my kids.

From what I have read here on the board it seems that it's a case by case thing for some ortho's and standard practice for others.

I originally thought that I would have molar bands but I don't either. From what my ortho said having them is more common than not.

My wife is in braces she has had them for 3 of 12 months and did not get molar bands. I on the other hand have 6 molar bands, 4 on the lowers and 2 on the uppers. I will be in braces for 2 years. I have to wear a pendulum appliance and will get my bottom braces on November 19 and my top braces 10 to 12 weeks later.

If you have to have an appliance such as a Nance or a pendulum, then molar bands are necessary as the appliance is soldered to the bands. Molars with large fillings or crowns are often (although not always) banded, because the band spreads the load over the whole tooth and gives it some extra support.

In straightforward cases without any extra appliances, it seems to be down the the individual ortho's preference. Mine seems to like bands on the top and bottom first molars. I also had bands on my top second molars, although I had one of those replaced with a bracket because it went under my gum and was hard to keep clean.

Bands are no big deal really. Once the spacers have made room for them, they are cemented on and that's that. You just have to be careful to clean round them properly.

I don't have molar bands, just brackets up to my second from last molar. Two orthodontists I saw said I wouldn't need them, although they are definitely very common.

I am a surgical case and my orthodontist did not use molar bands. I don't know if he has plans to change that down the road, but I haven't been advised of that being the case.

I'm going to have to ask my surgeon about that and present these abstracts that you posted because I don't want that to happen to me. Yikes.

I had 3 molar bands put on after repeated attempts at regluing some brackets failed. All 3 were on crowns that were out of alingment compared to the other teeth. I suspect just the pressure of the wire on the brackets made them pop off. After the bands went on the teeth came into line rather quickly.

I've been in braces for six months, did not have any bands until my lower molar bracket kept popping off then the ortho put a molar band on that tooth. Now my upper left bracket on my upper molar popped off for the second time, tomorrow I go for an adjustment, I will probably get another molar band. I prefer brackets, but whatever the ortho suggest I will do. what's the difference! A brace is a brace is a brace...

Don't worry Meryaten. I appreciate that you post the things that you do and that you are a regular source of information on this forum. I usually research everything that I get into, but with you here, I can be a bit lazy :D since you've done all the work already.
