Will extrasions change my face

#1 Post by 2004 »

I am 14 and they had to put a crown on a adult tooth but instead I got it pulled out because I knew I was going to get braces probably about 5 to 8 mouths later. I got the anther 3 pulled out and I got braces. After I got braces I read stuff online about peoples face changeing when they got extractions and I am kinda scared my face will change. Will it change does anyone have information on this.

Hello,

I can only speak from my own experiences with this. I am a fully grown adult (28) and I am currently in braces now--almost 5 months. I got extractions, and like you I did research and read stories online beforehand as well. While I almost bought into it, I decided to formulate my own opinions on the matter. Here is my conclusion:

Yes, things will change with extractions because you will be moving teeth to fill in holes where teeth used to be. In most cases, the changes will be very subtle and you may or may not notice them at all. I have had people notice that my braces have shaped my face nicely, so I have no complaints so far. I also look at myself in the mirror every day, and I think I can tell a little bit that my face has become less puffy in my cheeks and they are more defined.

Now, don't get it twisted, your face won't not change in some way if you only get braces without extractions (and I'm not saying this to scare you, don't worry). Remember, you are moving bone, whether it's closing gaps, relieving crowding, or fixing a malocclusion (bad bite). People seem to be under the assumption that if they don't get extractions, they won't have some adverse changes to their overall facial structure. But in my research, I have found that braces aren't just about fixing crooked teeth. It has a lot to do with what's already there and working to improve your overall appearance, including your smile and your bite.

If you trust your orthodontist and believe that he has your best interest in mind, you have nothing to worry about. However, like I said, I can only speak for myself as a grown adult. You are still young and growing, so your experiences may be different than mine. I just want to reiterate, don't assume that you won't experience changes if you don't get extractions. Some people need them in order to get the proper results, others may not. I don't know what your situation was. But I hope this helps ease your thoughts a bit.

One thing to keep in mind is that, if you happen to have deep nasolabial folds, extractions might further exacerbate their appearance. Food for thought.

I'm 17 and I got extractions 2 years ago, I haven't really noticed any differences but my face is more define but idk if its just natural growth or bc of the extractions. But extractions really help people with bimax protrusion

This was my problem, along with crowding and a tiny mouth.

There is some facial changes if you receive extractions, above all if the gaps are filled with the jaw retraction. The nasolabial and the mentolabial angles increase, your chin become more pronounced. So if you suffer initially from bimax protrusion, your face will become much better. I had my 4 first bicuspids because of bimax protrusion and incompetent lips. I am debraced for 2 years now and all is ok.

I'm coming up on 6 months and my gaps are closing nicely. My only regret is that I was so scared to death in the beginning to get the teeth out. That's so far behind me now it doesn't even matter to me anymore, and honestly I think I'm better for it. Still a long way to go, though...
