Angel269's Story

#1 Post by Angel269 »

I am 24 years old, married female and a mummy too in the UK.

As a child I developed a severe dental phobia-I would feel physically at the thought of a dentist, anything dental related and getting me through the door was impossible and should not have even been considered. I think most of it stemmed from the thought of braces-I was horrified and frightened to see anyone with all the metal in their mouth. I didn@t know what it was for but just felt it looked scary.

When I went for a routine check up about the age of 10 I was told that the dentist was going to refer me to an ortho for braces-I flipped and said that there was no way that I would have them.

I then became even more wary about going to the dentist, in fear they would keep pushing for me to go and get the braces. At the age of 14 we moved out of the area and then when the time came to register with another dentist I refused. All I got told by my Mum was that I would have teeth like my dad if I didn't go (He is a severe phobic with few teeth now tbh). 7 years passed and I knew I should go and have a check up and was sure I would need treatment-After lots of feeling unwell and facing my fear I was ok and 3 fissure sealants was all I needed.

Fast forward 3 years after getting over this phobia. My son had started teething and I had an incling that he would end up with my horrible teeth-I was right. He too has a large gap between his top front teeth. I felt that I am pretty certain that people will eventually wonder if he will get braces, as his Daddy did (mainly due to Cleft Lip) and his Mummy didn't. I didn't want to feel hypocritical by forcing him to have braces as a teen if I didn't and then started looking into getting braces-Words I never ever thought I would say, especially at the age of 24.

I looked secretly on the internet on forums and at pictures thinking can I even consider doing this and I even felt too embarassed to talk to my husband about it. He would see my sat with looking at stuff on the internet with me refusing to talk to him about what I was looking at. Eventually I caved in and told him. I honestly can't remember what he said but I think he just wanted me to feel happy about myself and not feel so awful about my appearance-I don't talk to people in the street, I walk with my head down and I am just too shy or embarassed to be introduced to anyone especially as my husband's wife, esp as he has such a nice smile!

I was originally going to get Clearstep and after lots of to-ing and fro-ing and impressions when the treatment plan came back at 16 months and hearing that it wouldn't fully rectify my problems I decided it wasn't for me. At this point I had already contacted somebody else reference clear fixed.

I got back to the dentist that I had spoken to reference clear fixed and he told me that he would be able to carry out treatment in this way in 8-9 months :-) He is a dentist but has been qualified and carrying out orthodontic work for around 30 years, including orthodontic work in the local hospital several years ago and has several patients that are receiving fixed orthodontic treatment.

2 weeks ago I went in for my impressions and returned today (22/6/12) and had my clear fixed braces fitted with white archwire (upper arch). The braces are to close my diastema and he also helps to reduce my overbite by using a bite plate as part of the treatment too (I will include photos shortly-Don't feel ready just yet).

Braces fitted and my teeth feel tight with lots of pressure. The brackets just feel huge (don't look it though!). Other than tightness I have't felt any real pain as such *touch wood* just chaffing on the inside of my mouth-my cheeks are really quite tender now! I currently have a 0.12 white archwire fitted to my ceramics and have my first adjustment in 4 weeks. I can't believe how discreet they look and fortunately my speech hasn't been affected by them.

I just wonder how long it will take me to adjust to eating-I feel so far with whatever I eat, even with food placed in my mouth in small pieces it get stuck in the brackets at the back! Will food become a necessity rather than something to enjoy?

I aim to try and keep this thread updated as and when things occur, or just after each adjustment appointment.

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing. We have a lot of similarities including dental fear and its a great reassurance to hear how well your doing. I get my braces on on Thursday and I'm excited to get started but scared of the process too. Let us know how youre getting on.

I haven't got the bite plate yet-We fitted it checked it out etc then he said we will leave it for now until I got used to fixed. I'm sure it will be reviewed at my first adjustment.

Just woken up, fortunately I don't feel the tightness like I did when I went to bed but I'm sure that will change as the day goes on. As it's the weekend I'm sure to bump into people I know-Only hubby and in-laws knew I was doing this!

It's now my first full day with the braces.

I felt fine when I woke but didn't think that would last. I have had a fair bit on tension but don't mind that knowing that things are progressing, some teeth are tender and others feel a tad wobbly already.

What I'm struggling with is are the very tender cheeks, which silicone doesn't stay on and oral gels aren't really touching.

Eating I hate at the moment, not due to pain but the embarrassment of food getting stuck. I hope this gets better!

End of my first full day and disaster has struck-My right back bracket came adrift eating a cooked prawn! I'm not a happy bunny as its Saturday evening and the wire is catching on the corner of my mouth too :-(

Angel29 - Congrats to you! I'm with you: the worst part about braces, to me, is the food getting stuck everywhere. I used to go crazy trying to get all of it out at once. Now... If it's not visible to others, it can wait until after my meal.

As for your broken bracket, that's fairly common. One of mine broke, too, after about a week. It was on a porcelain crown. The ortho just re-glued it, and it's been fine ever since. Just take any little mishaps in stride, and that will help you from going stir-crazy over the next 9 months. (So jealous yours is so short...) :D

Hi Angel,

Congratulations on getting your brace fitted but sorry to hear a bracket has gone astray already. I am sure if you contact your ortho first thing tomorrow, they will find a slot to re-bond it for you. In the meantime, hang on in there. A big lump of wax at the loose bracket/end of your wire may help. I know it is very difficult to get he wax to stick. The key to it is making sure that that part of your mouth and the wax itself are absolutely bone dry. That is not easy when we don't have the same equipment as the ortho, but if you use tissues and are persistent, you should manage. Once the wax is on, smooth it down with a damp fingertip and it should stay.

Good advice from Cathy; she is one of a number of old hands (hope she doesn't mind me calling her that) on this board who are worth reading and have a lot of useful advice, both practical and emotional.

Apart from being male and a lot older than you, I am in a similar position to you: UK- based, clear brackets on only top teeth ( just on front 8) , white wire (until my last one) and approx 9 month sentence.

In terms of meeting the world tomorrow with your new brace, it will probably be a non-event. The vast majority of people just did not notice my brace when I had it fitted, and the couple who did ( my hairdresser and one old friend) were just interested and supportive. I have gradually mentioned it and shown it to the people who matter to me, and try not to be bothered about what anyone else might think. I now have a thicker, silver coloured wire which is rather more visible, but I was 4 months in when I got that and am much less sensitive about it and try to always smile big as possible.

We are lucky to only have a short sentence and just keep focussed on the outcome.

Best of luck

hi angel :D

thanks for sharing your story. you are so lucky that you will be wearing braces for only 8 - 9 months. you will be amazed at how quickly the time flies.

i agree with jem, don't worry about facing the world with your braces. as you are wearing clear ones, most people will not notice until you tell them. i was wearing mine for 3 days before the people at work realised and this was only because i told them.

eating will definitely get better. after about a couple of weeks you will get the hang of it. also with regards to food getting stuck everywhere, again with experience you will learn to eat in a way to avoid this or keep it to the minimum. i was also abit worried of eating in public initially but at the moment i go out for lunch with my work colleagues about once a week and it has been a breeze so far. just make sure you always have a glass of water to give your mouth a good swish now and then :)

I was in contact with my dentist last night and (typically) unknown to myself he is on holiday for 2 weeks! He said that as it is so early in treatment it shouldn't cause any issues and suggested if I was happy enough to get my husband to clip it off what with it being the last bracket. I put my full trust in my hubby who successfully clipped it off. My dentist said he will call me on his return to get me back in for it to be rebonded prior to my 1st adjustment.

After lots of uncertainty whether or not I would post pictures because I am completely and utterly embarrased by my teeth  I have decided to do it, especially as I know that this would be something that many others on here were probably embarrased about doing too-

Here is the first picture-My teeth pre braces:

Image

Here is a picture of me with my ceramics (4 days later, as I never got round to taking a picture):

Image

They are not great quality, as they were both taken on my phone. Excuse the chapped lips and if my smile looks wonky, as I don't know how to smile because I have hidden my awful teeth away for so long

As I mentioned on one of my earlier comments I aim to try and take a picture on the day of the adjustment or around that time (once a month).

I agree, your teeth are really beautiful, healthy and white and will look amazing after the braces. Also this is probably a really odd comment but you have really nice shaped lips! You'll just have to practise smiling in a mirror because it won't be long before you want to show off your smile!
