Housenka's story - 10 months in braces... (pics)
Hi! My name is Monika, I’m 22 and I‘m from the Czech Republic.
I decided to get braces because my teeth were crowded and I also didn’t like my overjet. My teeth weren’t this much crowded when I was a kid but then my wisdom teeth started to grow and pushed the other teeth forward (especially my right central incisor).
I decided to get braces in May 2006 and I had to wait till September 2006 for my 1st appointment. The ortho said my teeth were crowded, I had an overjet and deep bite. Verdict: I needed 4 extractions (both upper 1st premolars and both lower 2nd premolars) and 2 years in braces. My dentist later decided that both upper wisdom teeth needed to be pulled out as well because they had cavities which couldn‘t be fixed.
Here is 1 picture before braces (more at the bottom):
Finally I got UPPER braces on in May 2007. They are titanium (nickel-free) because of my nickel allergy. I also don’t have any molar bands.
Here are some pics - May 2007 and July 2007 (teeth are already visibly straighter here) :
And in September 2007 I got my LOWER braces on:
Here in Czech Republic braces are not that expensive as they are in the USA. The whole treatment will cost about 20000CZK which is circa 1200USD. The appointments are paid by the insurance company though (but in Czech Republic virtually everone has insurance – we have quite different insurance system than you have in the USA).
Now it’s 10 months since I got braces. My teeth are really almost straight. But it will take at least another year to close the gaps, fix the overjet and deep bite. Here are some pics before braces and now, 10 months later:

Hi Monika,
Wow, the progress you have made...amazing!! Your pics of your uppers are amazing in only 1.5 months . I've only had my uppers braced for 1.5 months(lowers next week) but I haven't seen any big changes...but little ones are ok .
Good luck in your journey!

Wow, amazing progress Monika!
Really great pictures too! It must be so amazing to have such good documentation so you can see just how much change your teeth have gone through.
How was the response been regarding you getting braced? Did your family support you?

Thank you all for being so supportive!
Most people don’t react to my braces. Either they don’t notice them at all or they notice but they don’t care what someone else has got in his/her mouth (well, sometimes they stare a little bit… and twice or so someone said he liked my lig colors ). Few people asked what it feels like because they would like to get their teeth fixed too.
I have to say that I love my braces. Well, not braces themselves, the cleaning and sometimes pain, but I love how my teeth move. Sometimes I catch myself staring in the mirror, comparing how my teeth used to look like and how they look like now (and how they will look like once it’s done). And since I’ve got braces one of the first things I notice on people is how their teeth look like – it’s quite funny when I catch myself staring in someone else’s mouth, thinking of how much better would his/her teeth look like if he/she would get them fixed.
I didn’t see any negative reaction to my braces yet. I’ve been considering whether to get them or not about one year, bothering everyone around (friends and family alike), asking what they think about my teeth (I don’t understand now how could I think that my teeth weren’t that bad and that maybe they didn’t need braces at all ). Anyway, in the end I’m sure everyone was praying that I finally got them and stopped talking about it.How was the response been regarding you getting braced? Did your family support you?
