Newly Braced-Here's My Blog

#1 Post by mottsrods »

OK,
So I was braced on Dec 12th. I got metal all around. My ortho called them 'Quicks'... I just know they are self ligating. Now, day 1 I got upper and lower headgear, and molar build ups on the bottoms. It has all completely filled my mouth until I have no room to hardly eat or talk. I can't close my mouth to chew, and my lisp is very very very bad. Not to mention i'm crunching my tongue on one of the build ups.

I don't think I will be taking any photos of the headgear though.... bad enough that the wife laughed her ass off at me. Hey, beats having surgery. After I told her off, she went to the guest bedroom to sleep. She did try to kiss me, and busted my lip...So I will be posting a journal of photos of my progress.

I now can see what he meant by a small cross bite. And I still havn't eaten anything harder than a banana. I just can't chew! And I know it's not gonna get much better until the build ups come off.

I'll take some pics this weekend and get them posted.

Hey guys and gals,

I still can't really chew anything. My cheeks are getting tougher but I am still having a time with the ends of the wires in my bands. I have been salt water rinsing 10 or 12 times a day and that seems to help the most. The headgear isn't bothering me at all now, and I slept fairly well last night, about 6 hours of sleep.

Anyways, cheers to all, and to all a goodnight.

I'm glad to hear the salt water rinses are helping. One of my brackets is hurting the inside of my cheek a bit, so I rinsed with salt water, and I couldn't believe the almost instant relief! I'll rinse again after lunch :)

I hope you can get back to chewing more comfortably soon!

OK, i'm just getting around to updating about my emergency appt. on Tuesday. I had bitten my tongue really bad on one of the build ups. I didn't think I could not go to see my ortho. So I went, and I took a piece offering,ie;chocolate cake with real chocolate icing........praying they they would give me some relief. They felt bad because of my tongue and ground it down just a bit on both sides, but not enough for me to be able to chew much still though. After they got that finished, my ortho came over and said let me look see......... He was quite perturbed at how is is looking. He also ask me if I had been thrusting forward with my tongue. I havn't realized it if i had, and he said lets get a mold here and get you a habit crib for your next appt.....

Now just so you all know, my back molars are pretty far forward on the top and bottom and he saw this in the mold they had just took. He asked me that before I got my braces, where did I bite.......I told him and he said that that's why my TMJ/TMD has been so bad. My teeth are way forward and my jaw is way backward. Then he said that by my six month appt. my molars and all havn't made any significant movement, that he wanted to use a herbst to speed it up. Otherwise surgery is the only other way. And I am against anymore surgery on my mouth.

So this is where I stand right now. He also told me that when he first saw me for a consult, he didn't think this was gonna be as bad........but now he says......it will be drawn out a little longer and to be prepared. Whatever that means!!!!!!!

So Jaw forward, teeth back, it's almost too much.......Wait.....it is too much. I'll try and get a lurker/fetish free pic up soon......

And thanks to everyone's words of encouragement. Cudo's to all!!

Ok, i've been having a really hard time with my dual headgear and have thought about losing them completely. I talked to my ortho yesterday and he said if I didn't wear them, then it would set me back over a year. He said he could pssible do what needs to be done with springs and elasctics, but it still would mean a year longer in braces. So I guess I will just grin and bear it.

I also bit off my molar build ups last night in my sleep. So now my jaw closes all the way and I hit my bottom front brackets with my top teeth. OUCH!!!! I don't think I'm gonna call the ortho about them though, Just try not to bite the brackets off.

I have also stopped using wax at night. I think the calus's in my mouth are as thick as the one's on my hands. And i've also continued the salt water rinses. They seem to help with everything.........

Update 1-03-08

#8 Post by mottsrods »

So I think I had my first major movement lst night...I awoke this morning, took out the HG and my bite seems to be completely off. Not a bad thing. My upper arch seems to be around 7mm wider now than the lower. It was originally 4mm when I was braced. I'm still hitting my bottom brackets when I bite, but I am so happy that it has moved this much.

Now for the weird thing...I only have 1-2mm of spacing on my upper molars and 1mm on the lower from wearing the HG. It just doesn't seem right. But I guess my arch is moving and getting wider and is a more significant movement than my molars.

It feels so weird to have it like this, and eating breakfast was also weird when I couldn't seem to chew right.

Now, I tried to take better pics to post, but to save my life, I can't get them good enough. Gonna try again.........

Congrats on being braced!

Things will move around a lot at first. It's normal. If you are concerned just call up your orthodontist.

Sounds like a bit of a challenging start, Mottsrods, but also that you are taking things in stride. I look forward to seeing your photos :)

Ok,

I had my first official appt yesterday......WWWOOOHHOOOOO!!!!! No more HG! I'm still trusting with my tongue and he thinks I may be pursing my lips together in my sleep pushing them in on the top and bottom. My teeth are actually fairly straight now. I just have alot of leveling to do, and still need springs to help push my molars back. The last few weeks My TMJ/D has been very bad, and DM says it's from my bite, as i'm only biting on my front teeth.

So I also got ne wires, went from 14 nit's to 16 nit's....and he said next time I will be getting a rectangular wired with the springs on my molars. We discussed the Herbst again, but I told him I didn't want to do it unless it was a last resort.

So I have had 3 mm of movement back between my molars. It doesn't feel like it!! He also had to reposition a bracket on the lower bottom because I was still biting down on it. He said this would help with the leveling on my bottoms.

I will be getting elastics next time too! along with the rect. wire and springs. My next appt. is 12 weeks out, and I asked if this would be normal, and was told yes, up until the last 12 months of my treatment. Then they would go every six weeks.

Hey that's not fair! How come you get to leave your HG off (pout).

Those molar spring things are pretty effective. I've had a lot of movement with mine since I've had them on. Sorry you are having so much pain from your wonky bite though. I hope your teeth can soon get into a more comfortable position.

Keep us posted :D

Ok,

So not a good night last night. I bit the bracket off on the bottom that DM re-positioned. It came off with a loud pop, and then I was wide awake for the rest of the night. I have to go in this afternoon to get it fixed and I am gonna have to ask about him doing something to prevent that from happening again. As I am only able to bite on my front teeth only, I'm grinding my toofies on my bottom brackets. And it is chipping my teeth.

Wish me luck!

Thanks Ken,

Not a fix per say, but they took the bracket off completely and left it off until next Tuesday. DM wasn't there this afternoon so the tech did this. She put on the schedule for Tuesday to get a mold for a bite plate. I ask her if it would be removeable, but she said not likely, since I am a TMJ/D case and i'm a cronic clencher.

So, until Tuesday............
