Expander Worries

Hi, I am 25 years old and I am having the expander in a couple of weeks. I am really nervous about it. I know that there is a chance it might not work and I was wondering if any body has had any problems with theirs?

I am from the UK and I live in California now. I went to the dentist recently after not going for a couple of years and I thought I had no
problems, yeah right!

The dentist told me that I was missing one of the teeth that sit at the front, most people have four teeth at the front, I have three due to the dentist in UK taking out the wrong tooth. I still have a baby tooth and my Palette is too narrow. I think the philosophy in UK is 'if the teeth are not rotting, your OK'.

I am happy though that I am taking care of these problems.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice about the expander I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks :)

I do not have an expander, but ihave some comments. (i had one when i was a kid though)

I am from Europe as well, and it seems that there they do fix your teeth if you complain about your teeth/bite, but if they are not really bothering you at the point of time they let them be. I have a nice overjet, which does not really bother me. A dentists in Europe told me that it does not really matter as I am not a dancer or a singer...
I had to start treatment because my bite went off...long story...

Thank you for all the information, actually I must apologise if I offended anyone about the UK note. As I see by the many examples given that every country has its ups and downs with all issues, I shouldn't be so judgemental!

I had an expander (Rapid Palate Expander) for a little over a year. It worked quite well for me (got rid of my crossbite in back and gave me a nice wide smile). The only issues I had involved getting used to it: there is an initial bit of a lisp talking, it can be difficult eating certain things, sometimes it scraped the tongue,etc. Since it was working, I did put up with it. I am now glad it's out though!
