J Brace is Braced....

#1 Post by J Brace »

Hi. This is long so brace yourself.':)'

I hope I am posting this to the right area, if not someone let me know so I can copy and paste my brace story to the right area.
First of all thank you to everyone who administers this web site and also the people who post on here, it is a major part of what finally made me take the plunge and get braces.

Okay, so here is my story. Right now I am 27 years old, and I have considered them since the age of 17 or so. When I was 14 or so my bottom wisdom teeth started growing in and I just thought this was normal. I really hated going to the dentist (like most people I think), so I did not really say much to my mom or dad. But like I said I being only 14 thought it was normal for wisdom teeth to grow in this early, and did not think anything of it; so I did not think to get my wisdom teeth removed and my teeth crowded on the bottom more and more over the years. I think that is what caused most of the crowding in my opinion.

The condition of my teeth... From all the other peoples teeth on here since I have been lurking on here for the past 4 months, I would consider my teeth being a 7 or 8 with 10 being the worst I have seen on here. The ones that are most crooked are number 23 and number 26 on the bottom (with a couple of the surrounding teeth being affected a little because of those), and number 10 on the top, resulting from the first of my wisdom teeth growing on that side and pushing it out a little, and my number 8 and 9 in a little. I say this was caused by my wisdom tooth b/c it happened at the same time. Plus an overbite. So not too horrible, but not something I want to still be facing when I open my mouth and look in the mirror when I am 60, and I am tired of saying I am going to do something about it so I am actually doing something about it.

The first consultation I went to was when I was 17 and it was at a place in Hilliard, Ohio. The guy told my mom $5,000 and she was like uh, we are going to look around some more. The next place was in Dublin, and they said $4,900 and my mom said let's look around some more, again. Then we went to the O.S.U. school of dentistry and they said it would cost about $3,500 with payments of $1,200 up front, $1,200 halfway through and $1,100 when finished. My mom said that is more reasonable, but we will have to talk to your dad and look at our budget and see what we can do.

So a couple of months passed and it just kind of got forgotten. I thought about it more and more and I kind of realized that I did not want to have a mouth full of silver when I was 17 and 18 and look like a little 13 year old kid and a 'dork'. So I did not bring it up again, and as I have read on someone else's story here parents usually look past their child's imperfections and do not even see them; so my mom never brought it up again.

Time went by I got married to my beautiful wife and had a beautiful daughter and just bought a house. I have always been considered good looking by most people so it was not a huge deal. Over the years I never really thought about it that much and when I did take a good, long, hard look in the mirror and I got a little depressed, so I never did it. Then I started looking at my teeth more and more and taking better care of them more by flossing more, so I was forced to look at them. So I started to look into braces more. I went to a consultation in Gahanna, Ohio and they said $6,300! So I started to look into things on the internet. I ended up finding about dental discount plans which give discounts from 25% to 40% off of adult orthodontics. I ended up going with a company called SPAMPLAN USA, any other adults who have not started with orthodontic treatment yet should consider a dental discount plan like this to save money. Just Google dental discount plan, you will probably save money that way.

So I am really doing it now, I have (finally) already chosen my orthodontist, paid my down payment, paid for my records, had my records done, got my wisdom teeth extracted and got a cleaning and cavities filled.

I went in again yesterday and had some more impressions taken for and appliance that is being made for me. I am going to be going back in in a couple of weeks to get it put on behind my top teeth to start pushing them forward. I am getting clear braces on the top and bottom because I am a professional and make $60,000-$70,000 a year selling homes and do not want to lose any sales because of having a bunch of metal in my mouth, even though most people say it does not matter, it does to me and the less noticeable the better IMO.

I also quit smoking 3 1/2 weeks ago with a drug called Chantix :D
So this has been an eventful month for me. I feel pretty happy with my selection for an orthodontist, but I do have a couple of specific questions for you guys and girls. I will probably ask them later today or tomorrow, I have already looked in the FAQ, but I have specific questions so please check back.

I will post pictures of my self and my teeth when I get a chance. Thank you for reading.

Congrats J Brace on making the decision to get braced :jump: Although it is a hard decision for some, it is worth everything!!! Personally, it think getting braced when you are older and have to pay for it yourself is better. I have some friends that had them when they were younger and don't appreciate that their parents paid for it. All they remember is the negative. So if you feel ever like a 27 year old "dork", just think, you will be a "dork" with straight teeth  I'm currently just at dork status :D

This is truly the best site for braces, if you have any questions, you have tons of people to help. Keep us posted!!!

Phew I made it through the story line of your life and your teeth :D I know being 27 and paying for your own dental health is a pain in the rear but then again you’re doing something for yourself.

Before I got braces I didn’t spend too much time looking at my teeth, or even taking great care of them like I do now. I spend approximately 1 hour a day cleaning and taking care of my teeth. That is the brushing and oral hygiene in the morning, after lunch and after dinner. I always thought 1 hour was just way to much time but then again I’m keeping my teeth healthy and cleaned.

As Patricia stated this site is full of awesome things to read, awesome people that have been through what you’re dealing with or have dealt with, and are very helpful in answering some questions. I read that you sell houses, that is an awesome choice to be in is selling homes as they make great money all though it depends on the real estate market and stuff like that I think.

27 Years old and getting teeth fixed isn’t a problem I’ve talked to numerous people that range from 14 years old to 57 years old who have braces, have had braces, or are getting braces or even the thought of considering braces. I say go for it even if you have to pay for it yourself that is a great thing to invest in as you will now have healthy teeth as long as you take care of it for the rest of your life.

Anyways I’m sorry if I’m rambling on as boredom does really play a roll on some people.

My Braces Story (J Brace) -Pics

#4 Post by J Brace »

Here are the questions that I was going to ask. My dentist is in his words, "A big believer in appliances, and thinks that they save a lot of time and are the way to go."

Okay, that is all well and fine, but here is my question... He said that I have to use an appliance on the top and bottom. I have mild crowding on the top and moderate on the bottom. The appliance on the top is to flare out the teeth to make room for the bottom to be flared out also because both the top and bottom teeth are curved in a little. The one on the top is going to be there for about 3-6 months before I get brackets on and then after a few months I can get the appliance on the bottom, it will pull the bottom teeth back to alleviate the crowding on the bottom, then I can get brackets on the bottom. I just want to know is this normal to have to wait months before I get brackets on even the top, then wait more months before I get brackets and braces on the bottom?!?! I just look at the progress on other people's braces stories and the progress all seems to come once the brackets are on, and it seems that everyone else just gets extractions then gets the braces put on. I just want to see if anyone has gone through having to get appliances and having to wait for months to actually get braces on??? If anyone has please let me know so that I know that I did not pick the wrong ortho. So someone please let me know.

I appreciate your advice Karen and I took down most of my pictures, I will put pics of my arch up as soon as my ortho e-mails them to me. I Just thought I would update my story. I decided to go with the ortho that wanted to use appliances for two reasons: Firstly, he is a guy taht makes me fel comfortable. Secondly, I had already given him my deposit and I did not want to interview another ortho, I have talked to about 7 in my life and I just want to get started. Anyways, after talking to him more about the appliances that he is going to use it makes sense to me and I do not think they will be too invasive. But, has anyone else on here had experience with the appliances he is going to use?

His description to me about the top appliance:
I will be braced on the top first and have the appliance on the top first also, because my top teeth are curved in a little. The alliances major work that it will do is push out my number 8 and 9 teeth to make room for the bottom to come out. It is not a pallette expander.

His description to me about the bottom appliance:
It will be there to pull my back bottom teeth back because of crowding in the front. But this appliance will be applied after my top teeth are moved out some because there is not enough room right now for my bottom teeth to flare out because they are curved in too.

If you would like pics to kind of see what my teeth look like right now until I get my pics up you can look at sashmax's photos. My top teeth look very similiar to his and my bottoms are crowded like his except mine are moderately worse.

Has anyone else had experience with appliances like these??

I am very excited, I have my blue rubber band spacers in right now and they are not too bad. I am going in on may 4th in a week and a half to get my top clear brackets on and also the appliance. Someone please respond if you have had appliances like mine and not a pallette expander. Thank you.

Meryaten

#7 Post by J Brace »

Meryaten-
That is what he is doing pushing out my two front teeth. Because they are curved in a couple of millimeters and my number 7 tooth is out about 1 millimeter. This seems pretty common from the other photos I have seen on here. I have to say I enjoyed reading your braces story Meryaten and I especially liked the quote at the beginning. I liked that movie Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, I'm sure you have seen it haven't you? It is based loosely on one of the books. Like I said your story was entertaining. I have not had any real pain at all with the spacers, unlike you from what I read in your posts and I am on day four now.

Oh, and by the way, I misspelled the person's name that in their 'Braces Story' you can see their pics on page one and their teeth look similar to mine on the top and my bottom are a little more crowded. I spelled it sashmax, actually it is Sashamax. I am just using his/her teeth as an example until I can get my photos uploaded.

I got braced yesterday! I have my upper braces now, and I must say that they are a little more than I expected. They feel so huge in my mouth. I know the ceramics are bigger than the metal ones but my ceramics feel very big. To other people with ceramics, how long does this feeling last before I get used to it??

I also got my appliances on the top and bottom at the same time yesterday so after I left I was feeling like I had more than a mouth full. Eating for the first time last night was hard and very different. Luckily my lovely wife was considerate and made "breakfast for dinner" so it was easy to chew. She made Potatoes O' Brien and scrambled eggs. Was easy to chew but by the time it was over I had a lot of food stuck behind the arch wire and between the brackets. My ortho gave me a $150 powered toothbrush. An Sonicare Elite e7800. Very nice, but very powerful, it has two speeds: jackhammer and jackhammer. I am still trying to get used to it. I have not had much pain just a little pressure, so I guess I am lucky in that regard. Oh well just wanted to update my profile and ask the question of how long it takes to get used to the feeling of hugeness I am experiencing in my mouth right now. Thanks. Josh.

Thank you for the advice KK. OK, now can someone please help me out here. It is my firts day back to work (at my sales job) which I have to talk a lot at. I am sounding like all of the people that get made fun of that have braces. I make all of the sounds that are the "Trademark sounds" of people with braces, kind of like that little girl from South Park that has head gear ( I do not have head gear). Is there anything that I can do to stop making these weird sounds or as I am coming to call it my "braces accent" Are there any exercises or is there anything that I can do???

Maybe some diction phrases .. I am a radio DJ and I know your pain. I just talk A LOT all day long. Even if I am talking to myself. Just try to read loud something and speak slower. A slower pace can help you focus more on the correct diction and the way to achieve it. I improved my speech a lot these days and I don't sound as a "braces girl" anymore ...

The Shelly (Stan's sister) sound will go away. I had it bad and I was working with executives, talking to them face to face and tons of over the phone. Numbers were extremely difficult and I hated hearing myself. When I first got braced, people were asking why I was talking like I had a lisp. Now that my mouth is used to the stuff, it's not noticable when I am speaking. Just keep hydrated, dry mouth tends to get all caught and make your mouth do funny thigs.

Just an update. This is day four and it is getting a lot better. I can eat almost all of the same things as I did before, I just have to brush very thoroughly after each meal to get the stuck food out. Things are feeling a lot better and I can talk a lot closer to normal now. At first it was very weird, but after a while I am sure it would feel weird to not have braces. I am scheduled to go 18-24 months, so I might as well sit back and enjoy the ride. We are going on a mini vacation this weekend on an island in Lake Erie in U.S.A. It will be fun I am sure. Later on in the summer (in about a month) I am going to Florida for a week to stay in a hotel with a view of the ocean. I can not wait for that!

I already think I am seeing some movement even if it is only a little. I try not to look for any, because whenever I read someone else's blog at this stage in their treatment, I was thinking to myself that they should be patient and not look too closely, because as the saying goes (something like) Water takes forever to boil if you stare at it. So, I am not trying to look for changes, but it seems there are some little changes. I am excited.

And I will post some pics probably next week as soon as my ortho e-mails them to me.

I wanted to let everyone know that I did not forget about posting pics of my arches up here. I have been really busy lately, my ortho has not e-mailed them to me. And I do not have a digital camera of my own...yet. I do not know why I have been holding off to get one. I have almost every other thing digital someone could need. It is ridiculous the amount of things that I have, and not having a digital camera! I have 2 computers, a new 52 inch TV, three other TVs, three SPAMS, a DVD recorder, a VCR, a stereo, surround sound , a TV in my Acura TL, 3 cordless phones, a cell phone, a new camcorder, etc. But no digital camera. I will buy one soon, so I do not have to depend on my ortho, he is very busy. I am going to buy a digital camera in about two or three weeks. I have to because we need one for our vacation to Florida for a week at the end of July. So I will get one soon and put pictures up, I really will.

Digital Camera

#15 Post by J Brace »

I bought a digital camera yesterday off an online store that has auctions and begins with an e***. I did not spell it out because I did not want it to get marked as spam. I love that store, fantastic deals, I have bought a lot of stuff from there. So, depending on when I get it, I will either post the pictures right before I leave, or when I get back from vacation.
